The ringing of the bells in Nola

Set 16 miles from the city of Naples, the ancient city of Nola is a fascinating spiritual and historic destination. On a plain between Mount Vesuvius and the Apennine Mountains, it was one of the oldest cities of Campania and the site of several key battles during the Second Punic War. Eventually the town became a bishopric, due largely to the popularity of Christianity. In fact, a bishop named Paulinus introduced the concept of ringing bells during Christian worship services. The bells became known as “nolas,” and Nola eventually became a revered pilgrimage site for Christians all over the world.

Things to do

Historic Nola is a dream

Nola is jam-packed with delightful attractions that are musts for history buffs. And if you happen to be in Italy, you must make room for a little history! First stop: The restored Gothic Nola Cathedral. Orsini Palace was built in 1470, while the late-Renaissance San Biago’s church is a sight (and site!) to behold with its dramatic marble finish and stunning Neapolitan artwork. Observe the ruins of Cicala Castle, which was the birthplace of the renowned philosopher and poet, Giordano Bruno. A monument to this historical figure also stands in town.

Activities

Shop in a volcano and celebrate the bells

Who doesn't dream about shopping in Italy? Nola is a shopper’s paradise! The volcano-shaped Vulcano Buono is charming, and even has a crater-like center. Nola is also home to a handful of hip nightclubs that serve up colorful cocktails. The town also plays host to 2 annual festivals, including a 7-day event in June and another in November. There’s also a festival honoring the bishop of the church bells, St. Paulinus, which takes place in July.
