  • Loved it!!

"My daughter and I stayed here for close to a week in Unit 3. It was big and spacious and had everything we needed as far as cooking, towels etc. We loved that we could walk out right to the pool and the beautiful view of the ocean. We were able to walk on the beach, or street side either direction, to go to a restaurant to eat. You could walk 20 minutes towards the little village of Akumal and eat at Turtle Bay Bakery, or enjoy the shops there and the spa. You could also enjoy the beach in that area as well. This condo was in a perfect location, but private enough to enjoy. I think you might be able to rent a golf cart or bikes in the area somewhere to use during your stay. There were lots of turtle eggs on the beach, but every time there was a hatchling we were gone exploring the sights! Hopefully next time we can witness that. The staff at the condo is great and very helpful. Joyce Flake, one of the owners is a gem and will answer any questions you have. I had many via email before our arrival and she was very informative! This is one of the best privately owned places I have stayed at in a long time!"

  • Lovely house in a peaceful location

"First off, the house is quite lovely. It's at the end of a quiet street next to other luxury houses. We were there of Christmas and most of the other houses seemed unoccupied. The beach was right in front of the house and largely empty (we saw 1-2 other people per day). The 4 bedrooms in the main house are amazing and all of the public areas were grand and delightful. The two bedrooms in the 'basement' are dark and a little depressing. The kitchen was wonderful to cook in. It could fit pretty much all of us (11 family members from three generations). The pots and pans and utensils were lacking (the owners must not cook), but there were plenty of plates and cups and stuff. The power went out a couple of times and we had a friendly mouse, but other than that the place was perfect for our needs. We loved the ruins in Coba, the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary, Sac Actun, the Xel-Ha amusement park, Hartwood (in Tulum) and the beach in Tulum. Carlos (the manager) was AWESOME. Friendly, clear english, helpful, responsive, etc. We talked to him or texted every few days with an issue and he always resolved them immediately. Super lucky. There was also another Carlos who tended to the garden, a housekeeper and a security guard all of whom were friendly and competent, but since we didn't share a language there wasn't much communication there."

  • Would visit again!

"In the past few times our family went to Akumal, we stayed at Las Casitas but couldn't book a unit this time. We picked Casa Solymar based on the reviews - it looked classy and had three bedrooms and was walking distance to the main beach. The villa was a little set back from the road and had a lush garden. It was spacious with a great view, and everything was clean. The kitchen was well stocked and even had some oil and spices. The pool was a lot bigger than we thought, a great size for our family. We swam in it a few times a day. It was clean and not over-chlorinated. The villa provided an electric cart which was helpful when we made several trips to the grocery store or decided to go to Yal-ku which was a long walk away. We didn't think it was such a plus point when making our reservation, but it was really a nice convenience. The bedrooms upstairs were a little warm in late March. My bedroom had a faulty AC unit and never cooled down. When I contacted the manager, Monica Estrada, she sent someone to look at it right away, and the AC was replaced that very day. Monica was very helpful. Due to passport issues, I had to arrive two days later than my family and she arranged additional airport transfer. Every time I emailed her, I received a reply right away. Please be aware that the wifi connection doesn't reach the upstairs bedrooms. The beach is very rocky so you can't go swimming there. The view, though, is spectacular. On very windy days, the salt spray can get 100 ft right up to the windows. When we stayed at Las Casitas in the past, we used to tip the housekeeper every day whatever we liked. Here at Casa Solymar, the guest book said to tip the housekeeper and gardener 15% of the cost of the rental. We also felt that being asked to tip the gardener is quite unusual. Shouldn't the maintenance of the pool and garden be factored into the cost of the rental? The villa management should have asked for the rental + 15% upfront instead. The tipping request and amount felt like a hidden fee. Tipping should be optional. We did tip the staff because we wanted to, but didn't tip the 15% and felt guilty that they might not have been paid their fair share. But paying them is the responsibility of the management, not the guests. All said and done, Casa Solymar is a solid five stars and I would go back for a visit. Thank you, Monica, for making our stay a lovely one."
