  • Holiday Season in Playa del Carmen

"We travelled back to Mexico with our adult children to enjoy our first Christmas together since 2013. Casa Tortuga and the folks from Bric treated us well and the house met all expectations. The neighbors were great and helped quickly orient us to all the best places to eat and hang out while in Playa del Carmen (thanks Laverne & Jerry). The 5th avenue scene was a bit much for our taste but with the help from the locals we found a more relaxed pace off the toursit grid. A day at Tulum, Akumal and Xpu Ha beaches eased the madness of Playa. We would certainly consider going back to this property albeit at a quieter time of year. Casa Sophia and Bioorganics are both a must. Thanks Annabel for opening your home to us."

  • We could LIVE here!

"This condo is spotless, and though it's only a studio it has all the amenities. I'd forgotten my hair dryer, but found one in the bathroom. If you can't find it, just call the manager, who graciously answers questions and gives advice. Since this was our first stay in Playa del Carmen we had no expectations or ideas of the best things to do, and restaurants to choose. The condo has a binder from the owners with helpful ideas, there are some great maps available, and a book with notes from previous guests. We loved strolling Fifth Avenue (with its persuasive hawkers at nearly every shop and kiosk) with its many shops, stopping for coffee or gelato, and picking up fruit, pastry, and drinks at the mini-mart and bakery on Fifth Avenue near the condo. There are too many restaurants to recommend, but one of the condo's maps has helpful reviews of restaurants. Our favorites include El Fogon, Lido on the beach (where we sat for hours in lounge chairs enjoying a few cold beers while watching the water activities), La Cueva de Chango (garden setting), Chez Celine, and a little place that looks like it just opened called The White Bar that offered a Taco and Beer early evening special. We had no bad experiences with any restaurants so you can't really go wrong. We took the ferry to Cozumel for a day and had a four hour tour with a taxi driver who showed us some highlights along the coast. We also spent a day traveling to Tulum and Coba to explore the Mayan ruins. We'd highly recommend both of these for a day trip. We stopped at Akumel Beach but it was too late in the day to snorkel in pursuit of turtles, but several people we met said it was their best outing of their trips. The weather, by local standards, was cold (mid-70's) but the water was warm and we only had one evening of light rain. Overall, if you have decided to visit Playa - and you should! - this is a perfect place for a couple who isn't looking for room service."

  • Great Condo smack on the beach...

"Everything here was hassle free, just the way you want it on your vacation. Check in took under 10 mins, and after parking our car in their garage park, we were in our beach front Condo having a drink on the huge L-Shaped Verandah overlooking the white sandy beach and blue Caribbean Sea. The Condo was immaculate and had everything you could want including Wifi. This Condo is smack on the beach and it was so breezy, we barely use the AC's as we preferred opening the many sliding glass doors and enjoying the cool breeze. The property EL FARO is just block away from 5th Avenue. Starbucks is right on the corner and nearby are all the fine shops and restaurants. Even though it rained for most of the 3 days we spent there, we did not mind hanging out in our Condo. Check out was also a breeze. We will be back. Highly recommend."

  • A nice condo in Playa

"The unit is accurately described in the listing, and the owner and local manager were responsive to a few very minor issues that came up. The owner’s method of receiving payments directly by Visa is trustworthy. The kitchen is well equipped, the AC was very good, the beds are very comfortable, TV was fine and the wireless internet was the best I’ve encountered in Mexico and about as good as you can hope for there. The location is excellent: a 10-15 min. walk to the beach and 5 min. walk to the many restaurants on 5th Ave, however the best and cheapest were all a block or two off 5th. The nice balcony off the dining area that overlooks the pool was great for morning coffee, but can be a bit uncomfortable when there are people sitting on the balcony in front of it. However the real gem of the unit is the large and completely private rooftop terrace. There are a couple of good lounge chairs, and there is both sun and shade on it virtually all day. The tub on it is a hydro-tub, i.e. a large 1-person bathtub with jets. The pool area and grounds are very clean and well maintained. The pool is quite large and there are 10 lounge chairs around it. We were almost always able to get lounge chairs although a few times it was the last 1 or 2, however we were there in high season when likely all units were occupied. A few more chairs would help but, if worse comes to worst you can always have a dip in the pool and then head up to the private rooftop terrace. Entry requires climbing 2 flights of stairs which might be a challenge for people with mobility issues. The building was very quite, with most of the units occupied by retired couples. There is a large balcony off one bedroom and a small one off the other, however they both look out onto the street and there is little reason to ever use them. This brings up the only real problem with the unit: there is a major construction project going on across the street starting at 7AM. While the noise didn’t bother us too much (mainly because, unbelievably, they were using almost no power equipment) there were a few short very noisy periods. Unfortunately, there is nothing the owner or anyone else can do about this, so check with him on this if you’re sensitive to construction noise. Hopefully this will end in several months. Our electricity charge was US$30/wk, though we used very little AC. My only other suggestion: the small sofa in the living room is in great need of replacement."
