Though you can't expect many historical attractions when you stay at an Aklan vacation rental, there are some seriously beautiful natural wonders. Take Jawili Falls for instance. This 7-tiered waterfall, surrounded by forests, is impressive to say the least. Alternatively, you can slip into one of the pools at the refreshing Hurom-Hurom Spring to cool off. The 20-kilometer long Tulingon Cave is one of the longest in the country. How about bucking the trend of visiting Caticlan and picking up a rental in the charming little town of Buruanga, which is awash with natural attractions?
When visitors step off the plane, most head directly for Boracay, where the sun-soaked beaches offer some serious R&R. Some people spend their entire vacation kicking back on the powdery sand, pausing only for a dip in the ocean, or to tip-toe back to their Aklan vacation rental. However, if you get a little restless sunbathing, you could always hop into one of the rental outfits who will lend you everything you need to go snorkeling, sea kayaking or windsurfing. Don't know how? You won't have to look hard to find someone to teach you.
The peak season in Aklan is during the winter dry season, which runs from November through April. The lack of rainfall makes travel around the district and across to the islands accessible. It's worth noting that the temperature sky-rockets during the tail end of the dry season, making anything, bar beach time and swimming, a little challenging. You can pick up the best bargain on Aklan vacation rentals during the rainy season and although the heavens open up occasionally, it shouldn't affect your plans too much and there are far fewer travelers taking up precious room on the beach.
If you're spending even just a small amount of time in Aklan, you'll no doubt visit the tiny island of Boracay. It's voted one of the world's best islands for relaxation, but the biggest draw is the fabulous wildlife-spotting opportunities in the surrounding coral reefs. There's an exhaustive list of dive sites which bring you face-to-face with lionfish, angelfish and large groupers, as well as blue-spotted sting rays which glide around the coral. Drop off into the deeper areas and you'll see some of the big boys like huge tuna, barracuda and even reef sharks.
Fly into Kalibo (KLO), the closest airport, located 11.9 mi (19.2 km) from the city center. If you can't find a flight that works for your travel itinerary, you could also fly into Caticlan (MPH-Godofredo P. Ramos), which is 22.3 mi (35.9 km) away.
