Home of the staggeringly high giant sequoias

Calaveras County sits in the interior of California, to the east of San Francisco in the Gold Country and the High Sierra. It's perhaps most famous for the majestic, giant sequoias in the Calaveras Big Trees State Park, first discovered by a bear trapper in the mid-19th century. Many of these mature trees are thousands of years old, and reach a staggering 250 feet high and 30 feet in diameter. The county's other claim to fame is the annual Jumping Frog Jubilee, which celebrates the link between the area and the classic Mark Twain story, 'The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County'.
