  • Great location + Great for families

"For the past 4 years, our group of 3 families (6 adults + 7 kids) have been taking an annual trip to ski Bear Valley - to reconnect by spending time together. Prior to this year's trip, BV got dumped on (56-72" depending on whom you ask), and by the time we arrived on Friday morning, all of the roads had been cleared. The house is ~600' from the parking lot/snowmobile loading zone - close enough to just walk and carry/pull on sleds our things. The close proximity made getting our children (ages 2-10) down and back from the ski shuttle very easy, even after a long day of skiing. The layout of the house is unusual - I give a lot of detail here so you understand how open the house is (i.e. minimal privacy) and how flexible you need to be to share bathrooms. You enter through the sliding door/deck on the middle level into the living/dining room. Farther back is the kitchen, 1 half-bath and then 2 bedrooms and one of these has its own 1/2 bath. The bedroom on the left has a Queen. Across the hallway is a 1/2 bath with a shower + toilet. The bedroom on the right has a full size bed - but, there is no door to this bedroom, just a curtain. Attached to this bedroom is a 1/2 bath (shower/tub + sink), and there is no door. Anyone using this sink/shower is in full view of anyone lying on the bed. Downstairs is a bunk room with 4 bunks/8 beds and its own 3/4 bath (sink + shower + toilet). There is a W/D downstairs too. On the top floor is a 3 part loft - back part has a Queen bed, but no door; 1/2 bath (sink + toilet) with a door; and 2 twin beds - no door and open railing (not child-proof) overlooking the living/dining area. Despite the odd layout and the good fortune that our 3 families are very close, we were able to make due. The bunk room is AWESOME for the kids - they fell asleep talking and laughing and they woke up talking and laughing. The house is overall clean and tidy, rustic and homey in decor. Heat is provided by gas-furnace - some rooms heat too well, others less so - adjust vents to normalize. The fireplace is awesome for aesthetics, not for warmth; there was plenty of firewood/kindling below the deck. There were plenty of plates, glasses, mugs, pots/pans, etc. There were 9 chairs for the dining table, so we had a kids-seating, then a parents-seating for meals. Plenty of books, VHS tapes for the TV/VCR. DirecTV, No DVD player, No internet/wifi, very spotty cell coverage. This house was a great home base for our reunion ski weekend."

  • Great weekend in the mountains

"We had a great stay here. The property is just as the listing and photos describe it. We had two families with young kids and we had plenty of space. We used the house as a home base to ski and play in the snow. I'm sure the house would be great in the summer too! The hosts were very responsive."

  • Fantastic Weekend

"Our group of 33 (adults and kids) stayed for a weekend and had a wonderful time at the lodge. There was plenty of room to move around. The massive kitchen and dining table were put to good use. The kids had fun playing with the snow around the house and as if that was not enough, we drove to a snow park about 15 minutes away for even more fun. The weekend was filled with good food, fun games and intimate conversations among friends. We do have some suggestions for improvements: 1) Installing pull-out faucets in the kitchen sink...We found bending over the deep sink to do dishes for a long time could really hurt our backs ..2) Hanging curtains outside shower doors to give more privacy to the communal bathroom...3) Make the game room more inviting with better lighting and carpet...Water leaked in from outside while we were there... These were minor issues and did not stop us from having a great time.....As a bonus, the scenic drive on highway 4 to the rental was absolutely gorgeous and spirit-calming....Overall, truly a memorable weekend."

  • Great Labor Day WE Experience at the Twisted Oak Chalet

"The chalet was a great base for wine tasting in Murphys, hiking the Big Tree SP and playing at Alpine Lake. The house is well set up for any group of travelers, we enjoyed the really well equipped kitchen - we bbqed twice during our stay. The deck is a great place to relax, cook and eat. The overall set up worked very well for us, couple with toddler and another couple, however we could see bringing quite a few more people and still being very comfortable. Beds were great too. So, overall, the house is very nice and I think a great deal during the summer month. Travelling with a toddler often feels quite challenging so working with somebody who clearly cares about your experience is priceless. This is where this property differentiates. The owner Anthony is amazing. He checked in multiples times before we arrived, promptly answered various questions as well as kept checking in during our stay to make sure we had everything we needed. I would give him another extra star if I could :) and we definitely plan on returning! Thank you again for making this so enjoyable for us and being so helpful!!"
