  • Nice little place that could be easily made better

"Location is very good with a nice partial ocean view, open surrounding and very quiet. Excellent trails a short drive away. The management company is very easy to deal with. On the negative side, the house was far from being very clean when we arrived. The vacuum cleaner provided was useless and we had to fix it. Heating in the bedrooms can be very noisy (electric fans) and there is no heating in the bathroom. Kitchen is well furnished, but could benefit from new wine glasses. The laundry room is in the garage and the machines are a bit antiquated. The backyard is nice if it only were maintained a bit more. Driveway is unpaved and it can get muddy with heavy rain. Internet is a total absolute disaster and it is mostly unreliable. Maximum speed, if it works, is less than 2 Mbps. There is no cell phone reception is the area, so the house phone is a lifesaver. It is a portable unit though, so after long conversations, it may run out of power. Overall, the value was good, we were happy with the house and would probably rent it again. Meantime, one hopes that the owner will take care of some much needed spiffing up."

  • Truly 5 Stars!

"Hi Richard, Returned yesterday evening from some very special days in Humboldt County! We enjoyed our time at the Whale’s Tale very much – it was so comfortable and completely relaxing. We found the view out the back ever changing and mesmerizing! In addition to beautiful cloud formations, roaring sea, and tidal changes in the river, we enjoyed watching an osprey perch on the big dead tree that rises from the river bottom. We were also amazed and surprised as we watched a school of salmon come up the river – some of them coming almost completely out of the water. And while not completely certain that we saw otters – we definitely did watch two furry mammals swimming in the river. They were a ways off so maybe they were just muskrats --but a quick look up on Google said that otters do inhabit the lower reaches of the Mad River -- so maybe. When we arrived Tuesday afternoon the forecast told us we had only Wednesday to enjoy outdoor activities but, instead, the storm held off until Saturday morning! We hiked in the redwood forest in Prairie Creek State Park, searched for agates at Agate Beach, took a long walk at extreme low tide at Clam Beach, took some special photos at Luffenholtz Beach, and walked a stretch of the Hammond Trail. We visited some shops in Arcata and Trinidad and one of our favorites experiences was walking along misty trails in the Arcata Community Forest. We tried to take in as much as possible over just a few days and it was really great coming ‘home’ at the end of an adventurous day and enjoying the peacefulness and serenity of your lovely home. We want to come back!!"

  • Secluded and Sophisticated without Pretense

"Pilots Reach is an easy, convenient house-- it is beautifully spare without being intimidating ( items of quality mixed w a generous dose of IKEA). The radiating heat in the floors is a delight and always comfortable. The view is largely trees with a sliver of ocean. Although the house is in a neighborhood it is well secluded-- I never worried about privacy with the shades up all the time. The kitchen is well appointed and it was a pleasure to have matching dishes and silverware."

  • Lovely cabin

"We greatly enjoyed our stay at this adorable cabin. The property was beautiful and quiet with easy access to everything in the area. The cabin itself was very clean, and we appreciated the owners use of natural cleaning products. We also loved the wood-burning stove, which kept us warm on the chilly, rainy evenings."
