Big, comfortable, terrific location

4 of 5
When we decided on San Diego for our school vacation week in April, I spent a ridiculous amount of time searching for a place to stay — endlessly debating the merits of one place vs. another, somewhat challenged by my lack of familiarity with San Diego and La Jolla. In the end, I look a leap of faith and booked Manoir de Rose... and now, having stayed there, I can say I have no regrets. First off, the house itself was more than sizable enough to comfortably house my family of 5 for the week — with 1 bedroom downstairs, and 3 more upstairs, along with 3 full bathrooms to accommodate the group. Each bedroom boasts its own HDTV (although we had some troubles getting the DirectTV to work -- after I let Nancy's Vacation Rentals know as we checked out, they were very apologetic and told us they'd have someone out to fix things), and the house has central A/C... although I was happy to discover we didn't actually need it: With its hilltop position and lots of breezes, we found that opening the windows helped the house cool efficiently on even the warmest days. (Note: This was in late April... your mileage may vary) Of course, having a nice pool to ourselves directly out back also helped considerably — and while we chose not to pay extra to have the pool heated (an added cost, FYI, and not an insubstantial one at that) the water was refreshingly cool... and if we got too chilly, we could always leap into the full-sized hot tub just steps away. (Another note: Like the previous reviewer, we found lots of sand in the hot tub) We also enjoyed the gorgeous ocean views from the roof deck and two king bedrooms - you can easily see all the way to La Jolla Cove, and on a few quiet evenings we even heard the sea lions barking at one another. The location, which was one of my biggest concerns heading in, turned out to be terrific. The house is located a couple of miles uphill from La Jolla Shores, in a quiet residential community that we quickly discovered was an easy 20-minute drive from the zoo, downtown, Sea World, etc. So why not 5 stars? Overall, while the property was nice... it wasn't what I'd call luxurious or updated. Most of the appliances, kitchenware, and tub/shower set-ups are on the basic side — as my kids remarked, "This place seems like a nice grandparents house that needs to be updated." That said, it was comfortable, the location was unbeatable, the views were great, and my kids absolutely loved the pool. 4 stars it is.

Luxury getaway in a great location

5 of 5
This property is as good as it appears. Lots of room, nicely decorated, good sized bedrooms, nice bathrooms, lots of closet space, great kitchen and family room. The location is great, close to downtown and beaches and near to many area attractions. Easy in and out and we felt private and safe. The owner was very responsive to any questions and our stay very comfortable. I would recommend staying here, my family thought it was super awesome and all want to go back. I hope we do.
