  • Family vacation in February

"We rented Witherby Gardens for a family vacation to celebrate my nephew's 16th birthday. The home was very spacious, and easily accommodated myself and my two siblings with our four children. The home was beautifully decorated with thoughtfully placed antiques and the owner's beautiful artwork was showcased throughout the home. Beautiful, fresh flowers were placed in vases throughout the home, which I felt was a nice, personal touch. We felt right at home the moment we walked through the gate! The landscaping was beautiful, filled with blooming flowers and lemon and avocado trees, and a small, solar heated pool. The beds were comfortable, and with our busy days spent exploring all San Diego has to offer, we were grateful for that! The neighborhood is a quaint, quiet location that is easily walk-able. Short walk downhill to Old Town, but then you have to walk back up afterward. A few things to note, that I was given advance notice of: there is a washer and dryer on location, but it is in the basement and you have to go outside to access. This was not an issue for us, and we used them a few times during our stay, but if it had rained it may not have been ideal. Also, there was no coffee pot, but there was a very nice Breville tea maker. There is a lovely coffee shop a few blocks away that we walked to each morning. The appliances in the kitchen were SS, and the stove and pots and pans were top notch! We enjoyed cooking meals together, and the spaciousness allowed us to do so. There is a piano in the living room, and I wish I could play something other than Chopsticks or Heart and Soul, but our children loved it, and it inspired my niece to ask for piano lessons when we returned home! The owner was a pleasure to deal with. She responded to inquiries in a timely manner, and was warm and sincere in all interactions I had with her. I would highly recommend this home to others, and will definitely return again!"

  • Lovely Home Suitable for a Crowd, Great Location.

"This house is in a great location. The neighborhood itself is quite walkable, with lots of interesting/aesthetically pleasing homes to look at. Junipero Serra Park and the Old Town San Diego State Park are also quite nearby. The house itself is FANTASTIC for large gatherings. We held a family reunion here with 9 people (six adults and three children), and there were plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms, plus plenty of space for all of us to relax and hang out. (It seems as though the house no longer has the bunk beds that we were expecting -- but there were plenty of other beds, so no harm done). The kitchen was well-equipped, and we enjoyed cooking several family dinners together. In addition, the children loved the playset in the meticulously landscaped back yard. We encountered only two small glitches during our stay. First, the owners of the houses on either side of this property had placed signs that read "Neighborhoods are for neighbors - NOT short-term vacation rentals" in prominent locations on their properties. Apparently, San Diego (like many cities) is having quite a lively conversation over whether to allow short-term vacation rentals, and we felt as though we had unknowingly walked right into the middle of a feisty debate. While we did encounter a few unhappy looks from one of the neighbors, who scowled at us from a distance, nobody bothered us in any significant way. Second, the washing machine was broken; it stopped halfway through a wash cycle, when our clothes were sopping wet. The owners of the home were very responsive and picked up the phone when we called (even though they were in London, England!), but it was unfortunately after hours, so they couldn't get a repair technician there before we left the following day. We ended up having to take our clothing to a laundromat in order to finish washing it. Other than those two glitches, we had a wonderful time at this property, and all of us would highly recommend it. If you're looking for a comfortable, airy, modern home to live in during your trip to San Diego, look no further."
