  • Lovely Garden Apartment

"Our stay at the Bender's garden apartment on Oak St in SF was perfect. They have made a very warm and welcoming place that is well equipped with everything one would need. The place is centrally located with easy access to public transportation. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are sure to return again."

  • Wow, fabulous :)

"I chose this property for a surprise trip for my partner's 40th birthday. He likes trains (but in a good way!) so being right on the cable car route was a real highlight of his vacation. Thanks to Mike & Amy's Clipper cards and Google Maps, we were able to zip around the city very easily. The location between Nob and Russian Hills has some steep streets so you will want to bring comfortable shoes! The apartment is clean and comfortable with basic furnishings and a functional kitchen and laundry. Lots of windows let in natural light and air flow. There is some noise from the cable cars which run from 6 am to 1 am but after a couple of days you get used to them. As is to be expected in an older building, sounds carry between units: one evening we were even treated to a lady singing in Chinese for an hour or so. There are a number of corner stores within walking distance but for groceries you will need to go further afield - there's a Safeway at the end of the Mason cable car line. The coffee shop across from the Cable Car garage is good for coffee and light meals. In terms of activities, we spent a couple of days in and around Golden Gate Park, including eclectic shopping in Haight-Ashbury; rented a car for the day and drove down the coast to Monterey; wandered around Fisherman's Wharf; did some shopping around Union Square, walked down to the Ferry Building and took the ferry to Sausalito and back; and spent a rainy Thursday afternoon exploring Alcatraz. We also took in a couple of plays and a live singer, all close by in the Entertainment District. Mike was very friendly and responded promptly to all of our questions. Since we had late flights home, we were able to arrange a later departure, which allowed us to enjoy the most out of our final day in the city without having to carry our luggage around town with us. All in all, we would certainly recommend this property to anyone seeking a San Francisco getaway, you won't be disappointed."

  • Comfortable, quiet, convenient and well equipped. Highly recommended.

"San Francisco is quite expensive for any type of accommodation. Vivian's studio is modestly priced and it's 30-40 minutes by bus into the city. It's very conveniently located with multiple bus lines within a few minutes walk going to the city, the beach, south or north. Unless you have mobility issues, you won't need a car and you're probably better off without one. The neighborhood is great. It has a nice suburban feel without having to walk far for anything . There's a medium sized supermarket within 5 minutes walk plus plenty of smaller stores, cafes, restaurants, etc nearby. The wonderful Golden Gate park is only 10 minutes walk away. Vivian is a great host; she walked us through the studio showing us where everything was, talked us through her rules (which are very reasonable) and gave us good tips on public transport, cafes, etc. The studio was very clean and looks even nicer than the photos. The kitchen doesn't have an oven or stove. However, with the addition of some microwave safe cooking containers (I left one behind) I was able to cook pasta bolognese for dinner one night and beef tacos another. There is a small toaster oven, a toaster, coffee maker and a kettle (a necessity for making tea!). The fridge is a good size and there is a large water filtering jug which makes the water much nicer for drinking). The bathroom is clean and well appointed with various shampoos, lotions, medicines, etc available that you might need but may not be likely to carry on holidays. The Wi-Fi was reliable and fast - we had 3 phones and 2 tablets, sometimes all running at once and there were no problems. Vivian was happy to print some Alcatraz tour tickets for us that we'd bought online. The double bed is very comfortable and there are plenty of pillows, blankets, etc. We required 3 beds so Vivian provided a double air bed which I found surprisingly comfortable. The lounge folds out into a single bed however the hinge doesn't flatten out completely so there's a bit of a ridge in the middle - some may find this uncomfortable - if I had a choice, I'd use the airbed and leave the lounge upright. The neighborhood and the studio were very peaceful and quiet. There was a bit of noise from upstairs when Vivian's family were getting ready for the day or coming home but it was not intrusive in any way. The outside deck was being re-built while we were there - there was a little bit of noise at times from this but no inconvenience."
