  • Back to basics in Castella!

"We had a wonderful time at this lovely, rustic cabin. The location is good, 10 minutes from Dunsmuir and 20 minutes from Mount Shasta. Castella is a beautiful area, and we took advantage of being just down the highway from Castle Crags Park – there is great hiking there. This was a comfortable cabin for our mixed group of kids and adults. There is plenty of space for everyone to sleep, and a nice-sized kitchen to work in. The cabin is vintage - charming, comfortable, and has a huge, beautiful back deck overlooking the river. We even loved the squeaky stairs! The waterfall right across the river was nice to cool off in, too. The cabin is very rustic, with no frills, perfect for folks who really want to get away from it all and unplug. There is no Wifi or TV to distract you, so bring your books, games, and knitting. And you must love trains (which we do) to appreciate this location fully! It is very near the tracks and the trains come by at least 3-4 times per day, which is charming, but can be very loud at night until you get used to it. We were told to bring sheets and towels, which we did. The cabin is also free of amenities like shampoos, lotions, sunscreen, and so on, so make sure you bring your own. The kitchen is well-stocked with pots, pans, utensils, and dishes, and easy to cook in. The closest full-service grocery store is in Mt. Shasta, so you may want to stock up on essentials on the way. The owners were very responsive and answered all of our questions promptly. They obviously take great care of this beautiful cabin."

  • Lovely cabin, rustic but modern, easy access.

"This is a very charming 2-bedroom, 2-bath cabin with extra sleeping with 2 bunkbeds and pullouts for more. The furnishings are antique and make you feel as if you have gone back in time when the cabin was built. The kitchen is well equipped with a cheery cherrie red and white theme with a huge fridge. My daughter and I had fun cooking (mostly she!) and very roomy. We were very relaxed, went to Lake Shasta to boat and fish at Antlers Resort which was easy to get to. We missed seeing a bear that had visited the morning we arrived! even though there was highway noise, we didn't notice it after a while outside and you couldn't hear a thing inside the cabin. We were so relaxed there! There was a little trouble with one of the air conditioners, but my husband cleaned out the filter, and after running it for a while seemed to have fixed it. The place was really clean. AMy, the neighbor, was very helpful. The only bad thing to say is that the lighting is poor in the main living room. We definitely will be coming back next year and will recommend it to others. Thank you for allowing us to stay at your "cabin in the woods"!"

  • Beautiful, great view, private - would love to come back!!!

"My family of 6 and our 2 small dogs called this beautiful property home for 4 days between Christmas and New Years last month. The kitchen had everything you could think of to cook meals - we cooked all of our meals there and spent most of our time playing games and just being together. I just want to talk a little about the layout because it was hard for me to imagine before I got there and I think this may help as you plan your stay - especially if you have a bigger group. When you drive up, there is plenty of parking and the door with the code goes right into the downstairs game room with a pool table, fireplace, game table, tv and video games. We didn't spend much time down there because there wasn't a bathroom and also - stairs! Then, you go upstairs to the main level. To your immediate left is the master bedroom and bath (the bath has a convenient door leading to outside with a nice green grassy area where we would take our dogs out and not have to go downstairs to exit the house) and in front of the stair case is the guest bathroom and one private bedroom (this one has a ceiling fan which my oldest daughter enjoyed). Then to the right is the kitchen, dining room and family room (with big screen TV and fireplace)! This is where we spent most of our time. There are two sliding glass doors that lead out to a large patio with seating for 12 and a view of the lake! Off the family room is a stair case leading up the loft. In the pictures, I thought the loft was broken up into rooms - one with the 2 double beds and one with the futon (but it was basically one large loft - beautiful and open). My two sons took the two big beds and my youngest daughter (14) took the futon -- she would have liked a little more privacy and she also complained that as soon as we got up to start cooking breakfast she could hear everything! It didn't bother me though, just thought I'd mention it. There is also a full bath upstairs that the 3 kids used and liked that they didn't have to keep it picked up because I never went up there (except to help figure out who was sleeping where when we arrived)! The owners provided pellets for the stove in the family room and a few duraflame logs in the game room downstairs, but we didn't use them. The heater worked really well and the house was well insulated, so we didn't even run the heater much. The drive in to the property is beautiful and easy, no scary one way roads. Overall it was a great trip!"
