To catch a glimpse of bulbous West Indian manatees, hulking hippos, snapping American alligators and nimble river otters, you're best off making a beeline straight for the acclaimed Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. Boasting an underwater observatory and oodles of managed forest walks, it's the top spot for getting up close to Florida's unique Gulf coast nature. To the south of town, the Chassahowitzka River and Coastal River Swamps offer a chance to see even more of the Sunshine State's great outdoors, with boating trips, fishing excursions, and crabbing jaunts all on the menu.
Homosassa is known for its wealth of marine wildlife and the surrounding natural habitats along the Mexican Gulf coast. You can go in search of Homosassa vacation rentals that nestle between the babbling springs and croc-spotted rivers to really immerse yourself in the tropical backcountry of this corner of the Sunshine State, spending your time bird watching and bobcat spotting in the acclaimed state parks. Camping is also a popular pursuit, while boating trips out to the fragmented islands around Tiger Tail Bay and beyond should also be somewhere on the itinerary.
When the crowds retreat after the summertime holidaying period, and the tropical storms between August and November stop altogether, Homosassa is truly at its best. That's when the southern heat kicks in to bring warm winters to this corner of Florida, there's little rain, and the wildlife viewing in the region's state parks and marshes is at its finest. Look for Homosassa vacation rentals between the months of December and April to enjoy the best weather, and don't forget to bring the sun cream – it's not called the Sunshine State for nothing…
To the north, south, east, and west of Homosassa, it's wetlands that dominate the landscape. As the Floridian citrus groves feather out, they give way to the winding water channels of the Homosassa River, which gradually turns into a series of fragmented sounds and brackish lagoons, where babbling springs and clutches of tropical forest abound. This is prime manatee territory, not to mention a habitat for crocs and gators, otters, and black bears, all of which can be spotted on the nature trails of Homosassa Sprinvgs or on boating trips through the Chassahowitzka Swamps.
