  • Relax on the river, away from it all

"I've just returned from staying five nights at this charming, rustic cottage on the Ochlockonee River. My daughter and I wanted a place to relax and unwind for a few days and the river place was perfect for us! We enjoyed sitting on the dock and the front porch, just taking in the view, watching the white squirrels forage in the yard, listening to the birds singing, and hearing the occasional splash of a fish or turtle in the river. It was too cloudy while we were there to see much of a sunset, but I’m guessing that on clear days you could watch lovely sunsets sitting on the dock. The house is not luxurious - the kitchen and bathroom are both pretty small, the wooden floors have lots of vintage character, and there is no dishwasher. However, the kitchen is well equipped for cooking simple meals, the double beds were comfortable, the air conditioning worked great, and the decor was just as cute as could be. There are lots of chairs and benches for sitting on outside, and the living room sofa was great for relaxing on during a raining afternoon. TVs were available, but we didn’t use them. We did use the stereo system to listen to the radio and there was an extensive cd and movie collection. Cell reception (we have Verizon) was a little weak; calls and text messages got through no problem, but data was slow and spotty – sometimes we could download with no problems, other times the connection just didn’t go through. Like any old house that is out in the woods, there were a few spider webs here and there, but overall the house was clean, well-cared for, and ready for us to enjoy. The owner, Shannon, was great to work with. Very helpful and accommodating. Linens are not normally provided, but we were flying in and couldn’t really bring sheets and towels with us, so Shannon was willing to rent linens to us for a small fee. I managed to leave a favorite sweater behind, and she mailed it back to me. I hope to get back sometime, and intend to have a canoe or kayak with me next time in order to explore the river more. Folks who like to fish would probably be in heaven here. We spent much of our time just enjoying being beside the river, we did take in a few local attractions. We visited the George Griffin Pottery in nearby Sopchoppy, and had an excellent dinner at the Sopchoppy Pizza Company."
