  • A Good Place to Stay in a Good Location

"My wife and I, our daughter and their two children stayed at the Shipwatch condo for 5 nights the last week of October and are happy to add another 5 star review. The upstairs, downstairs format worked well for us, but some folks might find the downstairs a big dark. The condos on the upper levels of this 5 story building are all on one floor and the bedrooms have views as well as the living room and dining room. On the other hand, for us the quiet and the dark encouraged the grand kids to sleep in which meant we had a couple of quiet hours to drink coffee and watch the sunrise from the balcony. Amelia Island Plantation covers over a thousand acres and is anchored by the Omni resort center. The Omni is three buildings up the beach from Shipwatch along a winding road of live oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Scattered around the acreage are several restaurants and recreational opportunities for the kids like a mini-golf course, kayaking and fishing in the ponds. We didn't try any of these things because the kids wanted to concentrate on playing in the pool or at the beach and we cooked in every night. The ready access to the pool was another plus. From the downstairs (bedroom) level, you step out the door and down a short exterior stairway, cut under the building and you are at the pool. You can't get closer and you don't have to use the elevator, which friends in the upper level told us was really slow. To get to the beach you go around the pool on a boardwalk, cross a narrow fairway (look to your right for golfers, and then up some stairs and over the dunes to the beach. Great beach. At the end of October the water was still 75 so the kids were in the waves a lot. But the pool was their favorite. It is heated. I'd say to at least 80 and it is big, with three large semi-circular sections that make it look a little bit like Mickey Mouse's head from a certain angle. The section closest to the condo building is about 3-4 feet deep, the middle section is a bit deeper, and the section toward the ocean is about 8 feet deep. Lots of nice lounge chairs around the pool. This time of year there was good sun from about 10 am until about 3:30 when it went behind the building. But there was still good sun at the beach for a couple more hours. As others have mentioned the condo has all the utensils you will need, nice furniture, a big balcony and lots of tvs. Biggest plus: a great, responsive host/owner. This is not an agency managed rental."

  • An unexpected stay!

"We booked the condo last minute for an unexpected stay and Audrey was more than accommodating. The condo was perfectly stocked for our needs with young children and the location was great for walks to the beach. We enjoyed a visit to Fort Clinch State Park and the restaurants in downtown Fernandina. We hope to return again for a planned vacation. ☺"

The grounds are perfectly maintained yet the property is reminiscent of old Florida with lush tropical landscaping and canopied among the most beautiful large Oaks in the State. Plenty of Restaurants, Shops, Golf, Tennis....you can rent a golf cart or bikes to explore the plantation. Drummond Park is a great natural beauty for playing Ping Pong on the beautiful Marsh it offers great trails, basketball, swings, playscape and a small soccer field. Great to enjoy the peace and natural Beauty and catch a Sunset. Photography is Awesome anywhere on Island! Lots of Birds, Turtles, Sunrises etc. The beaches are beautiful and peaceful. We have rented from Mickey for years and do consider this our home away from home. Fernandina Beach is a short drive with Historic quaint downtown filled with wonderful shops and restaurants to explore. Mickey is just great to lease with for your perfect vacation!"
