"Wow! This house really exceeded our expectations in so many ways! The first thing I notice in any rental is the quality of the beds/pillows, because I want to sleep well while I am on vacation. The beds in this house were on par with upscale B&Bs or hotels—sooo comfy! You will never run out of bath towels, either (another pet peeve), because there is a closet full of them near the xlarge utility room. The utility room was a real bonus—great place to toss the kids’ dirty clothes so they aren’t all over their bathroom floor. Speaking of bathrooms, each bedroom has its own bathroom—again, upscale B&B/hotel quality bathrooms. The kitchen is huge and has a large (48-inch?) fridge—great if you have a full house and plan to cook a lot.
But the best part of the house is the outdoor living! Want to lie out in the sun? There is a deck on the boathouse with plenty of chairs and lounges. Too hot for the sun? The same deck has a covered area, and the house has a large covered deck with rocking chairs facing the lake. Would you prefer to be outside without being bugged by bugs? The screened-in porch is more like an extension of the house than a porch—it has a fireplace and dining table. We spent most of our time on this porch. If you just want to sit right on the edge of the lake and meditate, there is a gathering area around a fire pit with plenty of chairs that allow you to watch folks out on the water. The boathouse has three kayaks—one is a double kayak. This was perfect for our family of four. The cove is quiet and a great place for our young children to learn how to kayak for the first time. They really loved it.
The area has a lot of hidden gems. We visited several places that the owner recommended and were not disappointed. The Lake Burton Grille and Grocery, about 10 minutes away, has yummy, hearty sandwiches (BBQ pork, chicken salad, burgers). The Ingles on 441, about 20-25 minutes away, is the better bet for groceries, just like a Kroger or Publix in Atlanta. We also ate at the Universal Joint and Fortify Pi in Clayton. Both were super yummy. Check restaurant times, as a lot of stuff is closed Sunday and Monday, and some places are only open through the lunch hour. We enjoyed shopping at the little shops in Clayton and side roads.
We went on a couple hikes, the most notable being the lovely Hemlock Falls Trail in Moccasin Creek State Park, just 7 minutes away.
All in all, this was a very relaxing, memorable vacation. We will definitely return!"
