  • A little bit of paradise

"We spent four days at the cottage and never stopped marveling at the jaw-dropping view. Tucked away at the end of a long driveway, privacy was complete. The cottage, as others have noted, is old (70's I would guess?) with furnishings of the era, but we wouldn't have it any other way! The effect was comfortable and sweetly nostalgic, with an overlay of Hawaiiana that is perfect for the place. The bed was comfortable and the cottage was very clean. We love to cook and were pleased to find that the kitchen was well-equipped with the basics. The only thing we would recommend adding is a charcoal grill. Since we cooked in most nights, we did not explore the limited dining offerings of the immediate area, but found the market in Honoka'a completely adequate for our needs. The little craft shop and Waipi'o van station on the road just before you arrive at the cottage carries the wonderful local Tropical Dreams Ice Cream-- a must eat! We drove to Waimea (not close, but not far either) for Sunday brunch at Merriman's, which we highly recommend. The Hamakua Coast is gorgeous, but not filled with "attractions". For the most part, we were content to explore the small towns and coastal access points. The Waipi'o Valley, the Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive (along with the Onomea Bay Hike), and the Hawaii Tropical Botanic Garden were places we especially enjoyed. We also took the Hawaiian Vanilla Company tour, which was low-key and nicely done. (We would recommend touring in the spring when the vanilla plants bloom.) The lunch items, all made with vanilla, were delicious."

  • This place was simply amazing!

"We LOVED our stay here. Everything was perfect - from the note left welcoming us to the house, grounds, view, sauna, hot tub, location, and on and on. We definitely would recommend this to others and would stay here again if we ever get the chance to return! Thank you for the perfect vacation!"

  • Stunning.

"In short, all of the wonderful things the other reviewers say about this place are true, so I won’t make you read them all over again. This place is truly unique. Let’s start with the owner. Eileen is “deadly fast” on all correspondence and is a real delight to interact with. She provided a lot of information prior to my even asking and did exactly what she said she was going to do – be available if needed, but generally invisible. Couldn’t really ask for more. The house and view are incredible. The pictures are real! That view is actually what you wake up to every morning. There’s tons to do and see on the island if you want to be super-vacation-hyperactive and there’s also some prime spaces to sit, stare, drink immense quantities of Kona coffee/beer and ponder life. I traveled with my immediate family and my parents, so everyone had a great time both young and, ahem, older. This is just a cool place. Go."

  • Keolamaula is magical - an amazingly special place at an incredible value

"I know that's a lot of adjectives (above), but Kaye's farm is a real find. The location is perfect for exploring the Hamakua coast and beyond North Kohala to the West and Hilo to the south are easy to get to); the beds are comfortable; Bichi the pig and the other farm animals were charming; the weather (everything from sun to rain, never too hot) was great; and Kaye and Sally are wonderful people and perfect hosts. Our family (my spouse and I and our two six-year-old boys) had a great time and at the end of each day my littlest said "Mommy, I want to go home," meaning Keolamaula."
