  • a wonderful nine days with perfect weather.

"I have known Don and Susan since before they bought this property 40 years ago and have spent time on this incredibly beautiful land over the last 4 decades. Don and Sue are two wonderful and positive people. Their bright energy permeates the Lodge the same way the sun comes through the solid bank of windows in the large main room, instantly warming the entire house. I was fortunate enough to spend nine days in the Lodge this month (Jan 2016); my second stay. The experience just gets better every time I go. The first nights were moonless. I had forgotten how full of stars the night sky is. The green pastures and the surreal color of the ocean under the cloud elicited this: The sun, rich and warm above the green volcanic ridge, filters through the steam rising from my tea cup in the next room. Sing a song to Hamakua. 2,400 green feet above the expansive vinyl blue, to the sharp edge of the world, flat beneath the day's gathering clouds, rising white on azure. Ginger, the first perimeter, shakes hands with the sea. Little grass shacks and hula skirts, on the other side. What, here? Ohia de kine, brah, forest full. Every shade of green waving in its own vault of deep blue. Don and Sue's first home on the property was on the site of the current Lodge, so it really brings back memories for me. It could not be more beautiful, nor could Don and Susan's hospitality be more welcoming. The Lodge is clean, well appointed and spacious. My luck at having their friendship for my adult life is sublime. I hope you are lucky enough to stay here and to meet them."

  • A little bit of paradise

"We spent four days at the cottage and never stopped marveling at the jaw-dropping view. Tucked away at the end of a long driveway, privacy was complete. The cottage, as others have noted, is old (70's I would guess?) with furnishings of the era, but we wouldn't have it any other way! The effect was comfortable and sweetly nostalgic, with an overlay of Hawaiiana that is perfect for the place. The bed was comfortable and the cottage was very clean. We love to cook and were pleased to find that the kitchen was well-equipped with the basics. The only thing we would recommend adding is a charcoal grill. Since we cooked in most nights, we did not explore the limited dining offerings of the immediate area, but found the market in Honoka'a completely adequate for our needs. The little craft shop and Waipi'o van station on the road just before you arrive at the cottage carries the wonderful local Tropical Dreams Ice Cream-- a must eat! We drove to Waimea (not close, but not far either) for Sunday brunch at Merriman's, which we highly recommend. The Hamakua Coast is gorgeous, but not filled with "attractions". For the most part, we were content to explore the small towns and coastal access points. The Waipi'o Valley, the Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive (along with the Onomea Bay Hike), and the Hawaii Tropical Botanic Garden were places we especially enjoyed. We also took the Hawaiian Vanilla Company tour, which was low-key and nicely done. (We would recommend touring in the spring when the vanilla plants bloom.) The lunch items, all made with vanilla, were delicious."

  • Stunning.

"In short, all of the wonderful things the other reviewers say about this place are true, so I won’t make you read them all over again. This place is truly unique. Let’s start with the owner. Eileen is “deadly fast” on all correspondence and is a real delight to interact with. She provided a lot of information prior to my even asking and did exactly what she said she was going to do – be available if needed, but generally invisible. Couldn’t really ask for more. The house and view are incredible. The pictures are real! That view is actually what you wake up to every morning. There’s tons to do and see on the island if you want to be super-vacation-hyperactive and there’s also some prime spaces to sit, stare, drink immense quantities of Kona coffee/beer and ponder life. I traveled with my immediate family and my parents, so everyone had a great time both young and, ahem, older. This is just a cool place. Go."

  • Better than Advertised

"I know it might not seem possible but the Cliff House is actually BETTER than the pictures show. It is even better than the reviews can write. You can't capture this experience in a review! I am winding down a 20 day trip on the big Island. I’m writing this review from a resort in Kona. The Cliff House has no rival. It has no match. For your dollar the Cliff House could easily be the best place on the planet to stay. The views are beyond breathtaking. We thought they were astounding and then a few days in to our trip the distant haze cleared up and we could see the towering mountain of Maui. I thought I was in a movie and someone had just repainted the back drop. Richard (the owner and host) is everything you could ever want in a host. He is gracious, helpful, kind, and he asks questions about how he can make the Cliff House better. He goes above and beyond yet manages to do so without interfering. He is there but not there. He has been doing this so long he has fixed everything there is to fix. He has provided everything there is to provide. My 2 year-old daughter fed the cows, my mother caught some rays and my wife sang songs to our baby from the kitchen as she viewed 180 degrees of Majesty. I could write on and on and on about this property. Part of me doesn't want to tell you guys about it because it may make my future booking more difficult. This place is at the edge of the world. You have the entire jungle to yourself. Cell phones don't work but Richard has provided a landline and wifi. DON'T TURN THE TV ON --- enjoy the trip -- enjoy eachother --- put your facebook down. Enjoy the freedom away from the chains of your normal life. Come to the cliff house."
