  • Splendid home away from home!

"We loved our stay and found virtually everything we needed plus plenty of extras! This was a good home base for touring both sides of the island as well as Volcano and South Point. Waipi'o Valley was a little hard to access because of heavy rains - our trek on foot ended prematurely due to a crunched ankle - don't attempt that hill if it's wet! Luckily, I was blessed with walking stick someone left on the deck that helped me around for the rest week. We did make it down eventually by Jeep (4wd) and it was as beautiful as promised. We appreciated the excellently supplied kitchen and enjoyed fresh fruit smoothies every morning. Take advantage of the Farmers Markets in nearby Waimea! Nighttime can be a bit noisy with the frogs but no one had trouble sleeping. The trick is to wear yourself out during the day. This is a great place for anyone that wants to be away from the crowds and doesn't mind driving - I enjoy sightseeing so it was perfect for me. Our teens got a little bit of car fever, but those Kohala beaches are close enough to make up for it. It was a lovely vacation and I can honestly say the Hamakua Coast is my favorite part of the Big Island. We will be back!"

  • Stunning.

"In short, all of the wonderful things the other reviewers say about this place are true, so I won’t make you read them all over again. This place is truly unique. Let’s start with the owner. Eileen is “deadly fast” on all correspondence and is a real delight to interact with. She provided a lot of information prior to my even asking and did exactly what she said she was going to do – be available if needed, but generally invisible. Couldn’t really ask for more. The house and view are incredible. The pictures are real! That view is actually what you wake up to every morning. There’s tons to do and see on the island if you want to be super-vacation-hyperactive and there’s also some prime spaces to sit, stare, drink immense quantities of Kona coffee/beer and ponder life. I traveled with my immediate family and my parents, so everyone had a great time both young and, ahem, older. This is just a cool place. Go."

  • Awesome..

"Lovely place to stay, the view was amazing. Waking up to the valley every morning was the best part of my day.. I had fun picking fruit after Long day out.. The bed was very comfortable. I usually have trouble sleeping on beds other than my own, but one night I managed to sleep 12 hours.. Great place to relax. The only comment I have that is not great was that the knifes were not the best for chopping.. As someone who loves to cook and appreciate having a kitchen when away from home, having a good knife makes all the difference. The kitchen was well stocked, and that was nice. I had an amazing time. I plan on staying there again."

  • A little bit of paradise

"We spent four days at the cottage and never stopped marveling at the jaw-dropping view. Tucked away at the end of a long driveway, privacy was complete. The cottage, as others have noted, is old (70's I would guess?) with furnishings of the era, but we wouldn't have it any other way! The effect was comfortable and sweetly nostalgic, with an overlay of Hawaiiana that is perfect for the place. The bed was comfortable and the cottage was very clean. We love to cook and were pleased to find that the kitchen was well-equipped with the basics. The only thing we would recommend adding is a charcoal grill. Since we cooked in most nights, we did not explore the limited dining offerings of the immediate area, but found the market in Honoka'a completely adequate for our needs. The little craft shop and Waipi'o van station on the road just before you arrive at the cottage carries the wonderful local Tropical Dreams Ice Cream-- a must eat! We drove to Waimea (not close, but not far either) for Sunday brunch at Merriman's, which we highly recommend. The Hamakua Coast is gorgeous, but not filled with "attractions". For the most part, we were content to explore the small towns and coastal access points. The Waipi'o Valley, the Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive (along with the Onomea Bay Hike), and the Hawaii Tropical Botanic Garden were places we especially enjoyed. We also took the Hawaiian Vanilla Company tour, which was low-key and nicely done. (We would recommend touring in the spring when the vanilla plants bloom.) The lunch items, all made with vanilla, were delicious."
