  • IDYLLIC PLACE!

"This place is awesome, truly awe-some. If it's a unique Hawaiian experience with a fabulous view you're looking for, this is the place. Great place to relax. Richard, your host, is very gracious and provides you with both the essentials for the house and also some wonderful extras. It's not a "luxurious" experience--it's an authentic one. You'll think you're lost just before you arrive--but the view is unmistakable. I do believe it's the most beautiful view we've had anywhere. And my kids (and my husband and myself!) LOVED the cows! They were hysterical...would come running--faster than my dog!--to get some food. Great memory :). Hope to return--and next time, we'll stay for a month. Mahalo nui loa."

  • Great visit!

"A great view, clean home - had everything we needed. Marcie was good to deal with and Victoria the cleaner very nice, too. We'd stay here again."

  • Tropical Paradise

"The View House was everything I dreamed of for our Hawaiian vacation. It's a beautiful house with big rooms - pretty and comfortable, with plenty of space for storage. We were a group of four - two couples - and we especially liked having access to a second shower downstairs next to the spa area. It was lovely to shower and see the ocean! The laundry facilities on site were another practical plus. But the best feature is the stunning location and view. The view of the ocean from the master bedroom and house, including lanei, is amazing. The location also suited us, being close enough to access the North Kohala beaches and the bigger town of Waimea, without all the people at the Kona resorts. It was very convenient for the Waipio Valley Lookout and Honoka'a, but about an hour from either Kona or Hilo. We loved the quiet setting with access to the orchard: we picked some fruit and also heard and saw a fair amount of animals: cattles on a nearby property, feral pigs and the ubiquitous coqui frogs each night (which are all over the island - we didn't mind the noise and found it rather soothing). It rained most nights and often during the day - usually only briefly. I guess that must be why this part of the Island is so lush. We quickly learned that the West side usually remained sunny, so this is no problem, just something to be aware of. The owners, Marcel and Connie, were away during our stay but communicated well with us throughout our stay, even warning of an upcoming tropical storm. We were made to feel very welcome by them and by the caretakers, Marcus and Shigeko (speaking to them about said storm was very reassuring - in the end the storm weakened over the Island and mostly missed us). The linen closet was well stocked with soft clean towels, including beach towels, and previous guests have left lots of useful beach gear: boogie boards, umbrella, etc. Our only frustration - and this is a very picky point - was that the drawers in both bedrooms tended to stick in the humidity. We had ants in the kitchen but that was not helped by our reluctance to do the dishes quickly. When we arrived the place was spotless and we felt instantly at home. I already miss seeing the orchard, palm trees and deep blue of the Pacific every morning. Cannot recommend the property highly enough."

  • A little bit of paradise

"We spent four days at the cottage and never stopped marveling at the jaw-dropping view. Tucked away at the end of a long driveway, privacy was complete. The cottage, as others have noted, is old (70's I would guess?) with furnishings of the era, but we wouldn't have it any other way! The effect was comfortable and sweetly nostalgic, with an overlay of Hawaiiana that is perfect for the place. The bed was comfortable and the cottage was very clean. We love to cook and were pleased to find that the kitchen was well-equipped with the basics. The only thing we would recommend adding is a charcoal grill. Since we cooked in most nights, we did not explore the limited dining offerings of the immediate area, but found the market in Honoka'a completely adequate for our needs. The little craft shop and Waipi'o van station on the road just before you arrive at the cottage carries the wonderful local Tropical Dreams Ice Cream-- a must eat! We drove to Waimea (not close, but not far either) for Sunday brunch at Merriman's, which we highly recommend. The Hamakua Coast is gorgeous, but not filled with "attractions". For the most part, we were content to explore the small towns and coastal access points. The Waipi'o Valley, the Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive (along with the Onomea Bay Hike), and the Hawaii Tropical Botanic Garden were places we especially enjoyed. We also took the Hawaiian Vanilla Company tour, which was low-key and nicely done. (We would recommend touring in the spring when the vanilla plants bloom.) The lunch items, all made with vanilla, were delicious."
