  • A Memorable Holiday Time

"My family visited here over the Thanksgiving weekend. The property was perfect for us and contributed to the making of many great memories. We live on Oahu and wanted to come spend Thanksgiving in a quiet out-of-the-way place in the country. This location is definitely secluded, quiet and peaceful. The house is very comfortable and spacious with all the amenities and more! We spent a lot of time in the evenings alternating between the firepit and the hot tub. We cooked a full-course Thanksgiving meal in the kitchen which is fully stocked with implements. Waimea is a beautiful small town with excellent restaurants and nice farmers' markets for local produce. Thanks Heidi for your hospitality!"

  • One of the most perfect hideaway

"Mary's Garden House Hideaway is one of the best, quiet and peaceful hideaways that you will enjoy in the Big Island. It is located in the off-the-grid area of the rural north, 20-25 minutes from Hilo. At first getting there was a trek, but once you get there you will see a beautiful vista, lovely facility, exotic plant life, fun animals and a wonderful host. One key points into making your stay special is to make sure to have enough time to see whatever you need to see (which you really need time for. You can drive the entire island in 4 or so hours. We did not have this luxury because there's many stops to see, which will take your time); feel the beauty of the area (which is no doubt amazing and spectacular everywhere. Mary's hideaway is a jewel!); and be in the presence of something beautiful (which is really ineffable. You will know and realize it once you are there). TIPs: +First, if you want to enjoy your stay in the Big Island, relinquish your urban city perspective. It's more beautiful this way. +When planing to decide on where to to stay, consider Mary's facility...beautiful, peaceful and homey. +After you decide to stay with Mary's facility, plan an itinerary. She has many information about the island in her cottage. +In your initial itinerary, before you head to the island - first, we would suggest to rent an SUV or off road vehicle, just in case. The hideaway is off-grid and out in the rural areas of the upper north. Smaller vehicles is ok, but has less engine power and traction to go up hill and off the beaten path (you will go through unpaved stretch road. The road is new) +Second, make sure to spend some time getting to know your host. This was a missed opportunity for us since we only stayed there a very short time. She's a very nice and beautiful host. Also, enjoy her pets: Bonnie (she looks like a polar bear), Copper (he may look like Koojo, but is friendly and energetic young dog) and little Trouble (such an adorable cat!) Also, there's one cow and few sheep. +Last tip... JUST enjoy your stay! Mahalo!"

  • Beautiful, comfy, quiet sanctuary on the Hamukua Coast

"My week at Hale Kalopa was amazing and just what I needed! Augustus and Priya greeted me upon arrival and were available at any time during my stay, but afforded me perfect privacy. If I had a question about anything, all I had to do was text and it was resolved - and I only had one question during my stay because everything was set up so perfectly. The bed is SUPER comfy and the outdoor shower - AMAZING!!! The house dog Maya and I became good friends - she came to say good morning every day, and hung out with me a couple afternoons when I took some down time to read a book. The studio itself is just LOVELY! Plenty of room (LOVE the walk-in closet) to make yourself at home and everything you could need or want - even slippas for inside. The lanai is the perfect place for your morning coffee, an afternoon visit with a friend or a book, or an evening glass of wine. On a clear night, the stars are AMAZING!!! I live in the country in Texas, and have some pretty amazing starry skies here at home, but this was something else!!! Although I was on the island for my best friend's wedding, I did get time to visit some of my favorite places - Hilo, Volcano, Ka'u, Waimea, Honoka'a, Hapuna Beach - and Hale Kalopa was a great central spot for jumping off to anywhere on the island. Honoka'a town is about 10 minutes away and has everything you might want or need - visit Big Island Grown for some spectacular locally made jewelry, clothing and other goodies. :) Hale Kalopa was the perfect place for me to retreat from the stresses that come with wedding planning and coordinating - it was a delightful treat to come "home" to the quiet and serenity. All in all, just a delightful stay in a wonderful and home-like retreat. Mahalo nui loa Augustus and Priya (and Maya)!!!! I would love to come stay with you again soon! Aloha! Jenny"

  • A wonderful ranch getaway on the Big Island

"Staying at Brian's property was a really wonderful experience. The ranch is rich with history and Hawaiian cowboy culture, and looking out to rolling pastures was quite a nice way to wake up. Highly recommended."
