  • perfect for one couple

"This condo is a corner unit in the Fairways group of condominiums. It is in a quiet area with a view of the golf course and distant palm trees silhouetted against the sky; it is set back from this view, which is not as good as its neighbors enjoy in the same condo group, and I think the "Best Views" of the property title is a little overblown. The outdoor patio has a gas grill, like the other units, and a dining table and two lounge chairs, and we ate outside quite a bit. Because of the patio orientation, however, there is no place to sit in the shade in the late afternoons in February and March, a disadvantage, and the air conditioning compressors from this and the adjacent unit are very noisy when one is sitting outdoors. The master bedroom has thin, difficult to draw, curtains. There are large closets (containing plenty of hangars but only one, sashless bathrobe), There is a good kitchen with all the appliances and utensils one might need. the master bathroom is large, although one of the two sinks wasn't working when we were there; this will certainly be an easy to fix issue. In the garage were two portable beach chairs, but that was about all in terms of extras. Considering everything, we had a very good stay here. the unit is the right size for a single couple, although there is a second downstairs bedroom and small bath. We could sacrifice the view for this unit's lower rental fee compared with the larger condos in the area. The South Kohala realty who managed the property were responsive and friendly. We stayed last year in an adjacent unit, and liked the area and this unit enough that we have rented it again for next year, shortcomings and all! This is a beautiful area of the Big Island. the condo comes with free access to the Mauna Lani Beach club, a lovely area to sit, swim, snorkel, and whale-watch. There is a well-stocked grocery store and restaurants a half mile away, and wonderful beaches and restaurants within a half-hour drive. We especially liked Merriman's and the Red Water Cafe in Waimea, The Blue Dragon and the Plantation Grill in the Kawaihae Harbor area, and the local Monstera for sushi and noodles."

  • A really special place for two

"My partner and I stayed at Halawa house for 4 nights as part of a big milestone birthday celebration on the Big Island and could not have asked for a better place. The charm, care, and detail in the home is truly unusual and, as advertised, really designed for a visitor to enjoy the island. We loved the screened in, spacious lanai, and cooked pretty much all our meals in the well-equipped kitchen. Loved the gracious shower and various seating areas after a long day out and about. The outdoor bath and shower is situated beautifully. We loved the location at the very northern tip of the island, not far from the end of the road. We had great weather during our stay - a little rain at night, mostly sunny and warm during the days. The Pololu lookout and trail at the roads' end is spectacular, the nearby towns of Kapa'au and Hawi fun to explore, and we found it an easy drive to Kohala's resort area and beaches, and also the rancher town of Waimea. We even visited the nearby Mo'okini Heiau with our 4WD vehicle. The traveler who is squeamish about insects or geckos may find this home a bit challenging - as the owner clearly states, being in a jungle rainforest paradise is not without all the realities of nature, so I do mention that, though it did not trouble us. Most homes I have stayed in while traveling in Hawaii have some exposure to the island fauna. The entire house is screened so you can get the open air experience without mosquitoes. If you want a hermetically sealed lodging, best stick to the expensive resorts (and even there, good luck). David the owner checked in on us and made us feel welcome and valued. It was such a pleasure staying at Halawa House I really hope to return again, and I would definitely recommend it to my friends looking to visit this part of the Big Island."

  • Wonderful family time!

"Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The condo was perfect for us! The complex is beautiful and very quiet. We enjoyed every minute of our vacation. We only wished we could have stayed longer. The only complain I can make is that the garage door opener didn't work. I'm sure it was a battery issue. Thank you for such a great place to stay!"

  • User-friendly!

"This beautifully decorated and truly well-equipped condo has everything: gourmet kitchen, beautiful sunset views from lanai, great shopping close by, and access to the private Mauna Lani Beach Club with its lounge chairs, fabulous snorkeling, and great restaurant with live Grammy-award winning music. I loved that everything we needed was available without having to drive beyond the Mauna Lani Resort! It was a perfect fit for our family of four, including my 90-year-old mom. The owner is a delight to deal with, and we will definitely consider coming back to this property."
