  • Good lodging in a great location

"The house is well equipped for cooking and enjoying the beach, which is a 2-minute walk from the back yard. The house is located in an area that has limited development. Hence, there are less cars and people here than other locations in this part of the island. The house lacks air conditioning and can get warm on hot days when the wind is not blowing. However, the house is shaded by trees, the wind usually blows, there are many windows to open, and there are ceiling and floor fans to enhance the breeze. The beach sand and water were very clean. Week days the beach had few people but it wasn't crowded on the weekend. There are trees on the beach so you can move between shade, full sun, and dappled sunlight. There were some folding beach chairs at the house we conveniently used every day. The Wi-Fi worked well."

  • A Week in Dreamland....

"I shared the House of the White Owl with my 17 year old daughter, my husband and our best friend for a week and we all agreed there was no place we would rather have been. The house is cozy and comfy and has everything you need. The fresh fruit (papaya, mangoes, bananas) that awaited our arrival was fantastic! The mangoes were the best any of us had ever had. AND we learned that there are like 60 kinds of mangoes.... who knew?? The energy of the house and land is something special- at the House of the White Owl I felt both closer to the Earth, and closer to the sky..... The clicking geckos amused us all and we encountered no biting creatures of any type ;-) The closest town, Hawi, is great for its little coffee shop and Sushi Rock is top notch. The house is surrounded by rolling green hills, a 30 min drive from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and less than 2 hours drive from a rocky hike up the lunar landscape of Mauna Kea for those souls who prefer to toil on their vacations ;-) I am basically counting the days til I can return ;-)"

  • Loved it all. Peaceful and relaxing vacation.

"This was our first stay in the Mauna Lani area. We stayed in G201 from 3/20-3/26 and loved every minute of it. My DH even said upon entering “If I had known the place was so nice, we could’ve stayed here the whole time.” (Before arriving here, we stayed in Volcano for 3 nights.) I will say I wanted to stay closer to the water but the view from the lanai was great. We could see the ocean and sometimes hear the waves. The only issue I had was that sounds from the lanais seemed to echo off the other buildings. This is a low density complex which never ever seemed crowded. Several times we felt we had the place to ourselves. This unit was huge for a one bedroom. Nice big kitchen, roomy living area and 2 full bathrooms. The couch makes into a bed, although we didn’t use it. I was thinking we could bring along one of our nieces next time and they could have the couch and their own bathroom. The bed was comfy and waking up to seeing palm trees outside was always a treat. We did have an issue with ants in the kitchen. When I called about them, we were brought ant traps. These seemed to work well, but we would still occasionally see ants here and there. No big deal to us. We kept all food in the fridge. Lots of towels available, but only one real beach towel. You know the kind of long and colorful towels you take to the beach. We discovered later that bigger “beach towels” were in the unit, but they were white. This is one thing I think they could improve upon. We did like having a washer and dryer in the unit and used it a few times. There was laundry detergent already there and available. The terraces are a quick walk to Makaiwa Bay and the beach. They have cabanas and loungers for use. The snorkeling here is some of the best I’ve ever experienced. Lots and lots of fish in very clear water once you are about 25 yards from the beach. Snorkel early in the day for the best conditions. We went one afternoon and the water was a little choppy. The adjacent fish ponds make for a nice relaxing walk around the area. It’s also a nice walk over to the Mauna Lani Hotel for drinks and dinner. The pool and BBQ area were rarely busy. I went to the pool 3 times and had it all to myself. BBQs you can reserve time at or they have a grill and go BBQ if you don’t want to eat there. There’s a Foodland grocery store about a mile away. They have a nice deli and fresh food selections if you don’t want to cook. What I was missing was an ABC store, but it’s about"

  • Great condo on Big Island's west coast

"A very spacious and comfortable condo with very friendly and helpful hosts. It is right next to the pool and a few meters from the tennis court. Our host Kevin sent us suggestons for daytrips before we arrived including maps to the beaches and snorkeling spots in the vicinity. The garage was filled with everything you could wish for for hours of fun at the beach (folding chairs, umbrellas, cooler box, snorkeling gear, bodyboards...) free to borrow. We stayed with four people for five nights and had a great time."
