  • Wonderful family vacation!

"We are just completing our holiday stay at this beautiful condo. My family (3 adults--my husband, au pair, and I--and 2 kids, ages 8 and 12) thought this was the perfect place to spend Christmas. The condo was well-appointed with everything we needed, and our kids especially enjoyed the pool table and large TVs (with PS-3). We were able to easily cook our Christmas dinner in the kitchen, and loved having the nice grill and table and chairs outside on the lanai. The condo is located right near the pool and hot tub, which was nice. We never had trouble finding a place to sit. We loved the condo location, with a very short walking distance to the shopping areas, which have nice stores for all price ranges. Perfect for last minute Christmas shopping! Other things we enjoyed on our Big Island visit: 1) Paradise Helicopters tour of the island. It truly is a must-do! There were several first time helicopter flyers in our group, and everyone loved it! The close up views of the volcano and numerous waterfalls were unparalleled. Seeing snow up close on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa was breathtaking (and a nice touch for a white Christmas), and flying above glowing lava as it hits the ocean was a bucket-list item. We even saw a whale in the ocean from the sky. It was worth every penny. Our pilot, Dan, made the trip perfect. 2) Visiting Kona coffee growers and sampling fresh coffee. Informative and enjoyable couple of hours. We went to Hula Daddy and Mountain Thunder--both easy to find and < 30 min away. 3) Swimming and sunset watching at A-bay. Short walk or drive from the condo. The beach chairs/towels/boogie boards at the condo were so nice to have. There were plenty for everyone in our group to use. Plenty of shady areas. Though we went on Christmas Day, it was crowded but not overcrowded. We saw many sea turtles chilling on the beach or rocks. We found it preferable to drive to A-Bay rather than hauling all the gear with us. Plentiful parking and about a 2 minute drive. 4) Dinner at Roy's. We love Roy's and have eaten at these restaurants all over Hawaii (and at Pebble Beach). Waikoloa Roy's, which is only a short walk away, did not disappoint. Definitely make reservations in advance (can do on OpenTable). Thanks, Lars & Sherry. Great communications from you and the resort company. We didn't have any problems with our stay and would stay here again! Highly recommend this property!"

  • total relaxation

"We thoroughly enjoyed out stay at Ehu Kai. It was recommended to us by a very good friend who had stayed there. It is a very comfortable small house with a nice covered porch from which you can see the ocean through the trees. It is a very short walk down a pretty path to a lovely beach with lots of shade and good snorkling. It is also on a hiking trail that runs along the coast and allows you to walk north to Hapuna beach and south to Puako Bay. It is very quiet and private. If you want to get away from civilization to read, relax, swim, hike this place is a great choice. If you want air conditioning, a big screen tv, nearby restaurants and shopping you would likely not be happy here. It was just what we were looking for and we loved our stay. We loved the outdoor hot shower and the grills, both charcoal and gas. The kitchen is adequate for meal preparation----we prepared and ate all our meals at the house for the week. This place is not fancy, but very comfortable. The property managers are very nice and helpful and also rent kayaks, surfboards, stand-up paddle boards and bikes which they will deliver to the house. There are beach chairs and mats, boogie boards and some snorkling gear at the house. We would definitely come back again and would recommend it to family and friends."

  • Wonderful and Relaxing Family Vacation 12/31/16 - 01/07/17

"Our family arrived on the Big Island on New Year's Eve for a week of relaxation. Our oldest two (of 4) children are married and so we needed accommodations for 8 people. We found Kolea 11A on VRBO and selected it because of location, accommodations for a group our size, and the excellent reviews. We found that Kolea 11A lived up to our expectations! We were able to easily accommodate sleeping arrangements with the three bedrooms and the provided air mattress and sofa sleeper. A huge highlight for us was the open Lanai and outdoor kitchen with a table on ground level. We enjoyed morning coffee and many meals together in the beautiful weather. The door to the Lanai opens completely to allow indoor/outdoor living simultaneously. The property itself was perfect for our stay - a wonderful shared pool area and access to an amazing private beach. The provided storage area with a volleyball, boogie boards, etc. was a nice touch as well. If a need arose, Robert was available and responsive. We took in the Luau at the Marriott right next door, and a ocean kayak and snorkel adventure with King Kayak which everyone enjoyed thoroughly. Restaurants were amazing, including: Huggo's in Kona, the Canoe House, and Tommy Bahamas. We made many special family memories during our stay, and would definitely return. A final note, the weather in this are of the big island is perfect! there was snow on both peaks and we could see rain some days on the mountain, but our weather was sunshine and 80 degrees everyday!"

  • Wonderful Mauna Lani Palm Villas rental -- steps to the pool

"Our family (including two parents, two young kids, and a grandparent) was wowed by this beautiful ground floor condo at Mauna Lani Palm Villas. We were so glad to have this place to call "home" when we arrived, driving here from Kona Airport, exhausted by our 14-hour journey from New England. It is very clean and comfortable, and has air-conditioning for those hot afternoons! The unit has 3 BR, 2 BA, very well laid out. It was so convenient to have a washer-dryer in unit, for use after trips to the beach and pool. The lanai/patio adjacent to the golf course, was a favourite place to gather in the early mornings to eat breakfast and watch the sunrise. The garden is beautiful and features lush green tropical foliage, coconut palm trees and flowering plants. We saw several geckos and one huge praying mantis when we were there! The kids enjoyed playing in the garden, and in the huge driveway in front of the house. The unit is steps to the pool and the kids really enjoyed walking over to play in the pool. We also drove to the Mauna Lani Beach Club, and enjoyed swimming in the protected cove. It's great to be able to park at the "owner's/renter's" lot, which is so close to the beach. It's only a 10-15 minute drive to Mauna Kea beach, arguably one of the most beautiful, and relatively secluded beaches in the world! The boogie boards, beach chairs and umbrella in the garage, so generously provided by the owners, were wonderful to use on our trips to the famous Kohala coast beaches. We drove to the Hilton Waikoloa, Kawaihae, Hawi, Keokea beach park, Pololu Valley lookout, Waipio valley, and we would have loved to have gone snorkeling at Kua Bay/Captain Cook (but we simply didn't have the time for that). We felt lucky to have called this rental "home" in this magical place on earth, and felt sad to have to leave. We would certainly rent this unit again if/when we return to the Kohala coast of the Big Island."
