  • Excellent

"Rick's house on Kealakekua Bay is spacious and beautiful. It is well designed, immaculate and it has everything you need for a great vacation. The old school Hawaiian style beach is a short walk down the road for swimming and relaxing . The house has great views of the bay, sunsets, the surf and even the Captain Cook monument across the bay. The area is full of Hawaiian history and archaeological monuments. It is well located right next to the bay with a great market at the top of the hill and a couple quaint villages near by for dining. I would definitely go back here. Thanks Rick! It was an easy relaxing week!"

  • Gorgeous property that immediately relaxes you

"This is a great property. Even better than the pictures. Both rooms are really nice; one is larger and has an ocean view. The kitchen is really well stocked in terms of equipent. The patio is amazing. The neighborhood is quite steep but my husband had no problem driving in it. The location is great as you are close enough to drive to Kona, the south tip, and volcano but you're not in a touristy area at all. The beach that's in the neighborhood is a pebble beach that's nice, and they're are lots of beaches nearby. I would definitely stay here again. It is true, as the previous reviewer stated, that there are a lot of bugs at night but it's mainly on the patio. Being from Texas, I understand that a candle is really not going to do anything when you're waterside in the country, but perhaps the property needs to be treated. It is clean, however. I would book without hesitation! Much better experience than you'll get at a resort or even a bed and breakfast."

  • Unique and peaceful retreat.

"Makalani Oceanview cottage is a beautiful, unique accommodation. My husband and I were very pleased with the cottage. The cottage is beautifully decorated and well appointed with just about everything you may need for a great stay. Harry seems to have thought of everything (nightlite in the bathroom, a few umbrellas, all sorts of beach accessories, lots of extra towels and blankets, etc.). The ocean views almost seem like a canvas - too beautiful to really comprehend as "real". We enjoyed eating our breakfast each morning on the lanai of the "Mango Grove" (bonus) cottage. Each morning we were treated with dragonflies, the chorus of dozens of birds, and visiting geckos who seemed almost tame! Harry has added many special touches in and around the cottage; we really appreciated the fresh fruit and gorgeous flower arrangements in the rooms (even the bathroom). If you enjoy nature and want to stay in a magical place, this may be the place for you. This cottage is really in a tropical forest, so if you are afraid of a few bugs or night noises (tree frogs) and enjoy cookie cutter accommodations and amenities, you may be happier elsewhere. Harry is a very warm, welcoming and engaging person. He always responded very quickly to all of my e/mails and questions and was there to warmly welcome us the morning after our arrival."
