  • Beautiful house/setting, easily accommodated group of 8

"The pictures of this place do not do it justice. When you drive down the long, very steep and windy road to get here you wonder what you are getting yourself into and then you open the door to this beautifully decorated house (reminded me of what I would imagine an expat house in India looks like) with views of the ocean from the dining room, kitchen, and one of the bedrooms, lanais everywhere, a hot tub, a hammock...it is amazing. We were a family of 8 - 2 little kids (5,9), 3 grandparents, and 3 adults. The house easily accommodated us sleeping wise and never felt crowded. It was clean and well stocked. My kids loved being a hop away from the pebble beach and played in the waves almost every day. We walked to the black sand beach once but my kids liked the pebble beach the best. The crater rim hike leaving from the pebble beach is nice (fyi, 7:45 is too late to start - hot and no shade!). The house is nicely situated for sightseeing in S. Kona - we went to the kula kai caverns, volcano national park, and the place of refuge. If you aren't a vegetarian, be sure to get some local grass fed beef and shaved ice from the Kealia ranch store. Check out the smoothies and baked goods (and great guacamole) at the S. Kona fruit stand. The only word of caution/thing I wish we did more of was plan our food a little better. This house is a little off the beaten path - an hour from Costco (and the airport), 30 min in either direction for groceries, and 15-20 min from restaurants. So if you can get most of your groceries for your stay on you way in definitely do that and then supplement here and there (there is a nice farmers market on Sun in Capt. Cook). We planned day by day and that wasn't really ideal for us. You could easily come to this house for a week and never go anywhere else - you have an amazing house, easy access to 2 beaches, hiking - or you can use it as a nice base and travel around the island. We didn't have a chance to meet Deanna in person but she was extremely responsive over email."

  • WOW!!!

"Over the years, we’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to stay in some lovely villas during our travels, but I must say that the sight that met us when we first opened the stained-glass front door of Maka Nui nearly took our breath away. It is an exceptionally lovely home – with ornate furnishings and exquisite artwork, a fabulous Jacuzzi tub, a huge double shower, a well-appointed kitchen, and a wonderfully comfy king-size bed. The beautiful, rambling interior is surrounded by a screened-in lanai that looks out across the green hillside down onto Kealakekua Bay. We so enjoyed our evenings on the lanai reading – a delightful cool breeze blowing up from the sea, the faint song of the coqui competing with the Hawaiian music we had softly playing in the background. The grounds are gorgeous: acres of coffee trees, fruit trees, and fragrant flowers, with a much-appreciated impeccably-maintained swimming pool next to the house. Candi was such a gracious, considerate host, and welcomed us with a lovely basket of fruit, coffee, and chocolate macadamias. She is such a delightful, friendly soul – immediately there if we needed something or had a question, but otherwise completely respected our privacy. We loved this part of the island – so very lush and tropical. Maka Nui is very private, very quiet, and very safe. Located down from the Captain Cook area, on Napo’opo’o road, it is off the beaten path, yet not very far from good beaches, good snorkeling, shopping, sightseeing, etc. We SO enjoyed our stay there!"

  • Big Island Oasis with all the amenities and more...

"Dave and Beth's guest house was the perfect place to base ourselves for our short trip to the Big Island. Their hospitality was second to none and the guest house and amenities are superb. Dave and Beth were extremely helpful prior to our arrival and were prompt in all their communication. We flew in at night and were greeted by Dave standing at the gate (with his flashlight!) to ensure we knew where to go. Fresh fruit, coffee beans, flowers greeted us on arrival and the guest house is so homely and beautifully decorated (the bed is amazingly comfortable!). Dave and Beth ensure your every need is catered for - beach chairs, coolers, insect repellent, ukulele + instruction book just to name a few! Having the kayaks and scuba gear available is a great bonus - we kayaked down to the Captain Cook monument and had a blast in their great double kayak (I heard one of the tour companies hire then out for $65). We loved the pool outside the guest house and the geko's were a blast to watch and observe. Our trip was far too short and we will definitely be coming back!"
