  • Loved spring break at the cove

"We felt like we knew what to expect from the pictures and the other reviews, but I have to say the experience, the house and the view were even better than we expected. The view from the infinity pool was amazing and we loved the hot tub. We were there to witness spectacular sunsets on 5 of 7 nights. We slept to the sound of waves crashing on the rocks every night. The frontage down to the ocean is a little steep and rocky, but it was no problem for me and my family (2 teenage boys - 14 and 16). The seas were calm enough a few days for us to hop in and snorkel in the cove. There was a sea turtle and a variety of colorful tangs, wrasses and huge parrot fish hanging out there. I'd guess its 15-20 feet deep as soon as you jump in. A couple of rock structures made a ledge for a decent way out of the water. You have to use common sense though, there were a couple days the seas were way too rough. Safety first! The location of the house was a nice compromise for us since we wanted to visit the green sand beach and the volcano & lava tube on the south and south east part of the island as well as hit some of the attractions in Kona. I believe the nearest store was about 25 minutes south, while Walmart and other shopping was about a 50 minutes north. Plan your shopping and stock the fridge and cupboards. The house has everything you need to cook or barbecue on the Weber, there was even a strainer to make spaghetti or Mac n Cheese. We packed light, all carry-on, due to the full laundry available there. The house really had everything we needed. Fantastic place. Highly recommended!"

  • Great little getaway spot with a View

"After two stays here in two years I can say we like the place. If your looking for a nice clean place to stay and want to sit on the Lanai and enjoy a beautiful sunset away from the hustle and bustle of the city on the Kona side of The Big Island then this is a great place for you. The host and hostess August and Diva are very friendly and helpful, the bed is very comfortable and the view from the Lanai is especially beautiful as you watch the sunset and eat your evening meal or maybe have a drink or two. We have enjoyed many a cup of coffee on this lanai at the little table for two overlooking the beautifully manicured garden all planted by the owners. A few other nice things about this location is that you are only minutes from The Place of Refuge and Two Steps which has really good diving and snorkeling especially when the Spinner Dolphin are in the cove, which is often in the early mornings. There is also some great diving but somewhat difficult snorkeling at Pebble Beach - which is straight down the small subdivisions main street to the Ocean, and I mean almost straight down their main street to the Ocean ;) South Point and the Green Sand Beach are around 30 minutes away on the very scenic drive south towards Volcano National Park, which is about and hour and a half away."

  • Quiet, Clean and Roomy Cottage

"First, I have to say after reading the last review I was worried about staying at the Sugar Cottage. I'm so glad we were able to experience a very quiet and secluded get away. The cottage is exactly as shown in the pictures, it was clean, and well stocked with kitchen utensils and bathroom towels. The bathrooms were very clean. The best part of the cottage is the screened in porch where you can eat or sleep on the futon. Garry was very easy to work with and called the first day to offer any help or advice. I'm not sure why the last reviewer was so negative, but we highly recommend the cottage. The only reason I am giving a four star is due to the living room furniture being a bit uncomfortable for my husband's back. This is a great place for divers, snorkelers or like us, just enjoying the scenery."

  • Beautiful house/setting, easily accommodated group of 8

"The pictures of this place do not do it justice. When you drive down the long, very steep and windy road to get here you wonder what you are getting yourself into and then you open the door to this beautifully decorated house (reminded me of what I would imagine an expat house in India looks like) with views of the ocean from the dining room, kitchen, and one of the bedrooms, lanais everywhere, a hot tub, a is amazing. We were a family of 8 - 2 little kids (5,9), 3 grandparents, and 3 adults. The house easily accommodated us sleeping wise and never felt crowded. It was clean and well stocked. My kids loved being a hop away from the pebble beach and played in the waves almost every day. We walked to the black sand beach once but my kids liked the pebble beach the best. The crater rim hike leaving from the pebble beach is nice (fyi, 7:45 is too late to start - hot and no shade!). The house is nicely situated for sightseeing in S. Kona - we went to the kula kai caverns, volcano national park, and the place of refuge. If you aren't a vegetarian, be sure to get some local grass fed beef and shaved ice from the Kealia ranch store. Check out the smoothies and baked goods (and great guacamole) at the S. Kona fruit stand. The only word of caution/thing I wish we did more of was plan our food a little better. This house is a little off the beaten path - an hour from Costco (and the airport), 30 min in either direction for groceries, and 15-20 min from restaurants. So if you can get most of your groceries for your stay on you way in definitely do that and then supplement here and there (there is a nice farmers market on Sun in Capt. Cook). We planned day by day and that wasn't really ideal for us. You could easily come to this house for a week and never go anywhere else - you have an amazing house, easy access to 2 beaches, hiking - or you can use it as a nice base and travel around the island. We didn't have a chance to meet Deanna in person but she was extremely responsive over email."
