  • Peaceful, Affordable, Beautiful and Friendly

"As others have said: everything as advertised and more ! The private, screened-in lanai overlooks the ocean for great sunsets; snorkeling gear/beach chairs/umbrellas/coolers all provided for free use; close to Captain Cook and great pizza/shopping; cooking facilities, microwave, refrigerator, coffeemaker, free laundry, cable TV and all kitchenware/spices/etc supplied;. But all of this misses the charm, the peaceful allure, the solitary restfulness of staying here, that wonderfully intimate lanai... My wife and I (both 55+) loved this, and will be back when we can."

  • Far from the Madding Crowd

"Banana Bungalow provided just the secluded escape we were looking for, away from the bustle of the city but close enough to everything we wanted to experience - ten minutes from Pu'uhonua o Honaunau (the most extensive historical site), ten minutes from beautiful beaches for fantastic snorkeling, two hours from Volcano National Park, and twenty minutes from good dining. The ocean south of Kona is less turbulent than in the north, where winds whip up the waters, important for less experienced snorkelers. And the bungalow was delightful, offering all of the creature comforts in a lush, jungly setting. There is no need to rent beach gear, as masks, fins, boogie boards, and beach umbrellas are provided. And not to be missed - Bwana Bob's very funky coffee roasting workshop! Thanks, Susan and Steve, for welcoming us so warmly!"

  • Simply wonderful

"I'm going to add my voice to the chorus of praise for this wonderful, inviting, relaxing place. My wife and I stayed on this property for 9 nights with our 14 and 9 year old daughters, and I find myself constantly wishing to be back. The other reviewers have summed things up perfectly, so please read those as well. Our ending up at this location is what I call a "lucky misfortune". We actually booked a house a couple of doors down last October and were contacted in January that the reservation was being cancelled due to the owner saying that some working being done was behind scheduled and had a chance of not being completed by the time we arrived. He had contacted Shelley, this property's owner, to see if we could stay here and she contacted me about it before our panic had managed to fully kick in. Thank goodness things ended up the way they did. I can't say if the other home was nicer, and after staying here, I couldn't care less. Shelley is great; completely easy to work with and responsive to your concerns. One other note. Somebody else had mentioned about the disparity between the bedrooms, and I would like to add to that. I wouldn't recommend this house for two or three couples each with a equal share. Rest assured, the bedrooms in the guest house are very nice and worked great for our kids; it gave them a nice measure of privacy as they both like to go off and read (or text friends back home, ahem) by themselves for long stretches. But they don't offer the ocean (and moonset) view or large attached bath, and the sound of the ocean waves appear to be cut off as well if you like to fall asleep to that noise as I do. I also don't recommend this for families with small children who sleep in their own rooms as the separation of the guest house rooms would probably be intimidating to them."

  • Excellent

"Rick's house on Kealakekua Bay is spacious and beautiful. It is well designed, immaculate and it has everything you need for a great vacation. The old school Hawaiian style beach is a short walk down the road for swimming and relaxing . The house has great views of the bay, sunsets, the surf and even the Captain Cook monument across the bay. The area is full of Hawaiian history and archaeological monuments. It is well located right next to the bay with a great market at the top of the hill and a couple quaint villages near by for dining. I would definitely go back here. Thanks Rick! It was an easy relaxing week!"
