  • Great place to stay---close to everything.

"We needed a place to stay close to Kailua and found the Kona Makai to be just just right--only 5 minutes by car or 20 minute walk to town. Our top floor unit had a loft for some extra teen room and the two twins in the 2nd bedroom provided great sleeping flexibility. Kitchen was well stocked as promised and we cooked at the BBQs most nights--never having to wait and enjoying the fraternity with others. For sunset, we joined the others by the water since our balcony didn't view that direction--but all good again with just a short walk and plenty of plastic glasses in stock. They are serious about the pool rules with a vigilant manager on site--no kids after 8pm and all out by 9pm. Never had a problem with parking, though spots are assigned and you will have to walk a bit. Can always double park a bit for loading & unloading. Accessing the water for snorkeling just off the rocks there was not hard for adults (watch others first!), but not something for kids. Just down the road was the perfect easy access place though (Kahaluu Bay). Long sandy beaches aren't to be found in the south, but about an hour north is plenty (Hapuna perfect for boogie boarding). And don't miss the Volcano National Park! Overall, great location and nice place to stay!"

  • A heavenly retreat

"As a former resident of Kailua-Kona, I periodically return to visit friends and plug back in to the Kona vibe. I am so thrilled to find my new retreat for those visits! Kona Makai (most especially Building 1) is as perfect as it gets...breathtaking views from the lanai of the gorgeous tropical grounds, the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean with daily dolphin shows, and the magnificent Hualalai. My soul is restored every time I'm here, and I'm so at peace that I actually forget there is a world outside of Kona Makai. From the minute I walked into the condo, I felt welcomed and at home. Jon and Suzanne have thought of practically everything to make your stay feel homey, from a comfy and cozy bed to a superbly well-stocked and tidy kitchen. The Good Lord willing, I will definitely return next year!"

  • Comfortable, convenient oceanside gem

"Kona Makai is a comfortable, convenient, oceanside gem with absolutely beautiful grounds. It is obvious the complex takes great pride and care in the setting - lush green grass and plants; colorful flowers; clean parking, pool, grills and common areas. There is a very nice covered eating area with exercise equipment, ping pong tables, and a tucked-away library for beach reading. The evening sunset is an EVENT at Kona Makai, and provides an opportunity for residents and guests to gather oceanside to watch the waves, enjoy the sunset, and spend some time visiting. While the complex is right off Ali'i Drive, road and environment noise is not an issue. The condo, while small, is nicely equipped with all you need to make your stay in Kona easy and stress-free. Bedroom has plenty of storage for your visit, and the bath is nicely equipped (the tile work is really lovely). Lots of extras: plenty of towels in bath and kitchen (and good beach towels, not flimsy ones); beach toys for those who would like those (chairs and umbrella); dishes, glasses, and utensils are plentiful. Maria made the booking process easy - responsive, understanding, personable, and honest."

  • All the conviences of home

"Relaxing stay. All the conveniences of home including washer/dryer and a dish washer. Enjoyed cooking down by the pool and visiting with other guests/residents as we watched the sunset each night. We heard that the snorkeling is great at the shore access by the pool, but the surf seemed rough for us beginners. Only negative was the walk uphill to the parking lot (luggage, groceries, gear, etc). There are a couple of wagons available to borrow to assist with carrying heavy items. Having air conditioning was wonderful since we are used to a cooler climate (Oregon). Such a relief to sleep in a cool bedroom. The lanai is nice for coffee in the morning. The gardens are lush and beautiful and attract lots of birds and a few geckos. Made for great pictures. Couch is not a futon but still a comfortable bed. Very helpful and responsive owner. Plan to come back next year"
