  • Kalaoa Hideway: You can instantly feel the Ohana a

"When my husband and I decided to reserve the Kalaoa Hideaway for our 2nd half of our trip on the Big Island, we weren't sure what to expect. Much to our surprise, Donna and Jeff are superb hosts who immediately made you feel like family! Just as we settled in, Donna was there to greet us with her Aloha spirit. She provided us with fresh fruits from her garden, a fresh egg from her hens and filtered water. It is a very spacious unit with a comfortable King size bed. Beach gear is readily available for your use and bring to any of beautiful beaches (Hapuna was our favorite) and Donna even loaned us some snorkel gear (although we didn't get a chance to use it). There is lots of space to move around and the cabinets are fully stocked with just about everything you need if you plan to cook a lot. The temperature is tolerable since you are situated higher up the hill and the view from the terrace provides you with beautiful sunset views. If you are missing something, you are only minutes down the hill from Costco, Walmart, Target, Safeway and more...don't hesitate one more minute to reserve this place. Donna and Jeff provide great suggestions on what to do in and around the west side of the island. We truly felt safe staying there and want to keep this place a secret only so we can come back again and again! Donna managed to convince me to attend one of her Zumba classes, even with my two left feet. It was so much fun! Super busy with dressmaking/quilting projects, Donna carved out some time to custom fit an aloha shirt for my husband in the amount of time we left and came back from sightseeing. It's beautiful and she has so many fabrics to choose from. I love my yoga bag! I was so lucky to be able to shop in person from her Etsy store (Originals by Hitomi) . I just love her quilts and children's clothing! Jeff is so passionate about his hometown and his drive to "take back his beaches" Kudos for making the front page of the local newspaper! Keep up the great work! If we only had more time, I’m sure my husband would’ve managed to convince him out on a fishing trip. :) We already miss this hideaway and all the lovely pets that greet you everyday. Braddah (cat) is our favorite because he just wants to greet you with head butts, sit on your lap and lick you all over the place. We miss him, the Fears and this place already. Until next time...Mahalo!"

  • Our happy, comfortable stay at Suzanne's vacation home.

"We loved our stay at Suzanne’s vacation home. We were met and greeted. There is a nice treat in the room when you arrive. Our room (Ginger) was very clean and comfortable with table, chairs, refrigerator, nice bathroom, and comfortable bed. The small porch looked into lush plant thickets. The other guests were interesting, polite and quiet at night. We found the location to be excellent for our explorations. The climate there is also cool – very nice for sleeping! We will stay here again, and recommend this vacation home."

  • Perfect cabin, location and host

"My husband and I spent 17 lovely days in Granma's cabin near Kona. This was our second visit to the island and preferred this location and home to our first VRBO south of Captain Cook. As we were arriving very late, we greatly appreciated Harry having purchased some wine, beer and cream for us - this allowed for a relaxing drink before bed and a good coffee on our first morning. The location is perfect - 15 min from Kona - close to two major highways to travel around the island, and 15 min to the beaches. The elevation is equally perfect - high enough to be cool in the evenings (18C or 65F) and warm during the day (27C and 81F) - and moist enough to support lush vegetation but not rainy. The lanai was exceptional - we dined each morning listening to the birds and looking down to the sea. The size of the lanai was such that you could seek sun or shade at most times of the day. No bugs to pester you. Beautiful trees and flowers adorned the property - cardinals, doves and many types of finches fed at Harry's feeder each day. Lovely Madagascar geckos visited each morning following breakfast. We cooked all our meals at the cabin - the kitchen was complete - we used the stove, oven, microwave, coffee grinder, coffee maker and gas barbecue. There was plenty of hot water and we appreciated the washer dryer off the bathroom. The bed was very comfortable - this was an important feature for me. The internet speed was fast - we both did some work each morning and the connections were excellent. The neighbourhood was quiet and we took evening walks before dusk. The Big Island Running company was a good source for running company and running route advice. There were lots of beach supplies as well - snorkels, fins, mask, chairs, umbrellas, boogey boards, water shoes and towels. Harry was an excellent host - close when needed and at the same time was respectful of our privacy. Harry was generous - providing delicious avocados, grapefruit, freshly squeezed lemon juice and macadamia nuts. Harry is also an award winning brewer and shared a number of his beer with us. Admittedly, I prefer dark beer - I was privileged to sample 3 different types of Harry's beer - and they were all exceptional - dark to light in colour - truly award winning. The cabin is welcoming and comfortable and would love to make a return visit."
