  • Secluded, private but close to all major island attractions

"Three of us enjoyed Steve's place very much. The location is perfect, secluded and private but close to the best snorkelling spots, beach and towns. Steve allowed us to collect the ripe fruits on his property ...we will definitely remember the papayas and bananas we had for breakfasts. We also have to thank Steve for very detailed notes, tips and suggestions. We used them when planning our day trips, hikes and adventures. We would definitely book this place again. • Beautiful house/setting, easily accommodated group of 8

"The pictures of this place do not do it justice. When you drive down the long, very steep and windy road to get here you wonder what you are getting yourself into and then you open the door to this beautifully decorated house (reminded me of what I would imagine an expat house in India looks like) with views of the ocean from the dining room, kitchen, and one of the bedrooms, lanais everywhere, a hot tub, a is amazing. We were a family of 8 - 2 little kids (5,9), 3 grandparents, and 3 adults. The house easily accommodated us sleeping wise and never felt crowded. It was clean and well stocked. My kids loved being a hop away from the pebble beach and played in the waves almost every day. We walked to the black sand beach once but my kids liked the pebble beach the best. The crater rim hike leaving from the pebble beach is nice (fyi, 7:45 is too late to start - hot and no shade!). The house is nicely situated for sightseeing in S. Kona - we went to the kula kai caverns, volcano national park, and the place of refuge. If you aren't a vegetarian, be sure to get some local grass fed beef and shaved ice from the Kealia ranch store. Check out the smoothies and baked goods (and great guacamole) at the S. Kona fruit stand. The only word of caution/thing I wish we did more of was plan our food a little better. This house is a little off the beaten path - an hour from Costco (and the airport), 30 min in either direction for groceries, and 15-20 min from restaurants. So if you can get most of your groceries for your stay on you way in definitely do that and then supplement here and there (there is a nice farmers market on Sun in Capt. Cook). We planned day by day and that wasn't really ideal for us. You could easily come to this house for a week and never go anywhere else - you have an amazing house, easy access to 2 beaches, hiking - or you can use it as a nice base and travel around the island. We didn't have a chance to meet Deanna in person but she was extremely responsive over email."

  • Perfect honeymoon cabin

"Eric and I arrived late after I flight was delayed, we were greeted by Brad with flashlights and were escorted to our private cabin, we were impressed from the start, a perfect out of the way cabin, with screen windows and an outdoor kitchen; I would not recommend if you don't want to be part of nature! Every night we got to listen to the frogs. We got to see banana flowers blooming with geckos licking the bloom during the day. It was also a nice combination of amenities including wifi access, running water (toilet, bathtub, shower) and a TV. The kitchen was also fully stocked including insect repellent and sunscreen! We also got coffee, bananas and macadamia nuts on our arrival for us to enjoy! really would recommend to anyone looking for a romantic getaway in Hawaii!"

"We very much enjoyed our stay in this vacation home on the west side of the Big Island! It was nothing fancy, just quaint with a beautiful view of the ocean! It was exactly what we needed after a death in our family forced us to reschedule this vacation. (The owner was very gracious in accommodating our revised plans and did not charge us for the changes.) The property was clean and seemed well-maintained. We especially liked the two separate bedrooms so us parents had a separate room from the kids. And the kids each had their own bed. We were surprised by the catchment water system that they have but were supplied with bottled water for our drinking needs by the owner. Thank you. The hillside community is peaceful and safe. As others mentioned, this house has a steep driveway, so we parked at the end of it and walked down the steps alongside the driveway and then up the steps alongside the house to the front door. The home is far from grocery stores and restaurants but we had planned for that. We absolutely loved the Fruit Stand for most of our grocery needs. The home made a great base for our exploring the island from Kona to the Southern Point to Volcanoes National Park. One note, the pictures made it seem that the kayak for use was a 3 person one, but it is not. It only holds 1 person safely. We did use it a few times. The pebble beach that is at the bottom of the hill in this community is quite nice and a great place to swim, snorkel and kayak. We also made use of the beach chairs and mats and snorkeling gear! One day when we stayed more local, we were thrilled to see a gray seal swim up to a small snorkeling beach in Captain Cook! We would recommend this home to anyone wanting to explore the island, enjoy some peace and quiet and doesn't mind driving for food and supplies."
