  • A Lanai for whale watchers

"Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was very happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We loved our stay at The Sunrise House, and we were the first to sign the guest book! The cottage is newly rebuilt after the 2014 hurricane so all appliances are new. The bed is very comfortable. Jeana was able to get WiFi to the house before we left which made connections to our family much easier. We loved the lanai for whale watching, watching the waves and reading. If you love to snorkel, the tide pools just blocks from the house are a marine sanctuary. We walked there daily."

  • Geothermally heated paradise

"Our family had a fantastic stay in Kapoho! We loved snorkeling with the turtles, crabs, and tropical fish right out the backdoor in a breakwater-protected, brackish cove heated by jets of Kilauea-heated spring water. The feel is very secluded but still only a 15 minute drive to groceries and a handful of restaurants in Pahoa town. Hilo has many more restaurants, pretty parks, and spectacular bay views around 40 minutes away. The gushing fire hose of lava pouring into the ocean in Kalapana (Feb 2017) is about 30 minutes away. Everything is super lush and green and tropical, being on the Hilo/windward side of the island. The beds are comfortable and the home's finishes pretty and utilitarian (tile, granite counters, nice composite decks). Be sure to follow key pick up instructions through the HomeAway website as the iOS app doesn't show attachments. Our only complaint was the small Weber grill was missing its ash catcher/damper, which makes a charcoal fire hard to control. A gas grill would be much easier and reduce trips to town for charcoal. Second best would be a new ash catcher and a chimney coal starter to avoid yucky lighter fluid. We will definitely be staying in this property again on our next trip to our new favorite island!"

  • Peaceful setting with dramatic views

"We LOVED our stay at Kapoho! We have visited the Kapoho area three previous times but this house has, by far, the best views. The home is comfortable and supplied with everything we needed. We enjoyed snorkeling just a few steps from the house. We had dinner at Kaleo's Bar and Grill in Pahoa (always a favorite of ours) and went to the Kalapana farmers market on Wednesday night. The farmers market is an experience not to miss. We are looking forward to our return visit."

  • Absolutely Perfect Vacation Home

"The home was beautiful, with a perfect lay out. The open kitchen, dining and living room areas all had ocean views. The kitchen was well stocked with supplies and the basics, as were the bathrooms. The tide pools have wonderful snorkeling, with calm wander and hundreds of fish. It was never crowded, even on the weekend. The place is very private and very quiet (with the exception of the geckos, one of whom liked to chirp in the middle of the night!) Kirk, the host, was incredibly kind and responsive, the best we have seen with VRBO. It was only a little over 40 minutes to get to the end of highway 130 for the path to the Volcano viewing area (rent the bikes, it is a LONG walk), which was SPECTACULAR on our trip, and a little over 30 minutes to Hilo. Pahao is a short drive away. The market their is serviceable, though small. Given the remoteness we ate in most nights and cooked out own meals. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat on the Hilo side of the island this is the place"
