  • Great get away

"Liz and Steve were such gracious hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed our "home away from home". We loved the fresh bananas, the chickens, the frogs, the geckos and let's not forget Larry and Tucker! Thanks for making our stay so wonderful, hope to be back again! Mahalo, Jan and Steve"

  • Imagine this.....

"Every morning my husband and I woke up from a restful slumber in a very comfortable four post bed. We would drink our coffee in the sitting area outside the master room overlooking the private pool, black lava cliffs, stunning ocean waves and pale blue skies. The neighborhood was quiet and the house serene as my mother in law and sixteen year old daughter slept in their two rooms on the opposite side of the house. I would set up my yoga mat at the far end of the pool so that I could feel the sprinkle of refreshing ocean mist that would occasionally be carried over to the yard by the gentle sea breeze. By that time my husband and his mom would be sharing their coffee in the shaded, covered area that had the larger outdoor table and chairs which we would use every night to play a rousing game of scrabble that the house provided along with other games, a puzzle, several books and DVDs to watch. The house had a long closet full of visitor friendly items like sunscreen, bug spray (which we never needed) rock sandals, pool floats (the house had plenty of pool accessories in an outdoor box), snorkeling items, and other tourist friendly items. There were plenty of bath towels and beach towels. By mid morning I was eating my breakfast sitting out past the back gate and on the lava rocks overlooking the ocean (not too close to the edge, always keep a respectful distance from the drop off). It was surreal in the beauty and the simplicity. It was the kind of view that deserves the over used word - Awesome. Our days were spent exploring the Hilo side where we ate great meals and enjoyed the culture of the Island. My husband and child went zip lining while my mother in law and I enjoyed a day strolling and visiting the Lyman museum. We went to the volcano and took the two hour hike in the caldera after a great lunch at the Volcano House. On Saturday we went to the outdoor market and purchased hammocks, got henna tattoos, and some local art after eating a great meal at Pineapple. At the end of the day we would take a dip in the beautiful maintained pool and sit in the pool chairs to enjoy the last moments of sun before starting our scrabble game. We are foodies so we did cook several dinners at home. The only thing I would have changed would have been better cookware and updated kitchen appliances. We were able to cook fabulous steaks on the great grill outside, and enjoyed many of the fresh fruits from the island. I would return here again!"

  • Authentic, Serene, Unique

"This is by far our favorite accommodation ever. This house was built with every detail in place, but with an eye for comfort and for peace. As soon as you enter the inner court, the stress is left behind and deep sense of serenity overtakes you. Then a sense of adventure leads you to every room, nook and cranny. There are many rooms in this house, outdoor and indoor: dining room, living room, sitting room, lanai/terrace, family room, bedrooms in far corners, bath houses and Japanese Ofuro (deep bath), a small devotional room as well and a wrap around lanai that takes you around it all inside and outside the compound. The inner court has a pond and a Japanese garden with fish, an occasional white cat passing by rather quickly and a mother hen with her babies strolling through (if you are into Miyazaki Movies, you will find yourself in his world). There are different points from the lanai where you can sit which offer different views points to the garden. There are also so many varieties of plants, it is like a botanical garden. I would highly recommend a guide book. There is one in the house, it is huge but doesn't cover all the plants found here. The Western style beds and furniture are highly comfortable and I would think on the luxury end of the line, the kitchen offers everything you need and is low maintenance. It was super clean and the owner was very accommodating and pleasant. The surrounding is beautiful and close to amenities. We have kids and we had a talk about keeping everything in the proper spirit of the place: they loved the place and were impressed. They played in the pool and went on discoveries and found 100+ treasures. Some spent hours drawing and writing. We have worked overseas for 15 years and have been in all kinds of buildings, 5 stars to 1 star, Western World to Third World countries and this is by far the most amazing and wonderful building we've ever been to. It is extremely hard to leave. This place would especially suit people with a high amount of stress, those bereaved or those who would want a new start in life or who would want to decompress from their stressful routine."

  • Rain forest delight.

"What a beautiful and comfortable house. Our family had a totally unique experience being in the rain forest and near the volcanoes. Owner provided enough of everything to make it comfortable and convenient. It felt like an oasis in the middle of the jungle. It is hard to think that a gas fireplace is needed in Hawaii but with the altitude and occasional rain it was a welcome extra in the AM and late in the evening. Great spot!!"
