  • Fantastic !!!

"Absolutely fantastic place. One bedroom, one bathroom, kitchen, living room and balcony. Well-decorated and well-equipped! The owner has thought every little thing that one might need and stocked up... including ear buds haha. The lagoon is right behind the apartment. There are two turtles which are permanent residents of the lagoon. They are friendly and come to you when you are in the water. Seafood restaurant right in front of the apartment. Our family absolutely loved it here."

  • Tranquil, well appointed gem of a place.

"This place was great. It rained a lot but it didn't matter because it was so cozy, so serene, with everything you could need to relax and enjoy the setting. Great location, easy to get to, but totally private. Every detail of the house, from the bed, to the furnishings, to free snorkeling gear, to to the well equipped kitchen was perfect. The hosts live near by and made themselves available for anything that might come up. I wish I was back there right now!"

  • Perfect

"We spent 5 nights at this house. Hawaiian life vacations went above and beyond to find this place for us when another rental fell through at the last minute. The house was immaculate. Lots of light and windows. Great ocean breeze. If your a musician, like us, you will appreciate the mini Martin guitar and ukulele. Unlike other locations on the Red Road, it's a quick shot to Pahoa for groceries, drug store and restaurants. Also close to Uncle Roberts, for music, farmers market, shopping, and great food at the night market. Beds very comfortable, kitchen well stocked, lots of DVDs. Although we didn't have children, there are plenty of toys and infant supplies on site. We would return to this sweet house, and appreciate the extra mile Hawaiian Life went to find it for us."

  • Wish we'd stayed longer...highlight of our trip to Hawaii

"My husband and I stayed for two nights in Volcano amidst a 9 day trip to the Big Island. The time we spend in and around the National Park here was easily the highlight of our trip and if/when I return I'll book at least 3 nights. The hiking in the area is simply spectacular and staying in Volcano allows you to easily see the park both very early in the morning as the sun is rising, and later in the evening when the lava glows eerily in the dark...and when most of the visitors/tour buses have either not arrived yet or have left. Trying to day trip from Kona is an exercise in driving fatigue and we later learned that many Kona-based travellers never make it to the park which is a huge mistake. The cottage was perfect for the two of us. The pictures are accurate and we were really impressed by the decor - the artwork is local (we ended up seeing the artists represented in various Island art galleries) and the woodwork is warm and includes one-of-a-kind tables, benches. The area is so quiet you can almost hear it... The cottage was immaculately clean, the bed was very comfortable, the fireplace was a godsend (it's cold up there...), there was ample parking, no issues getting in or finding the place. As others have mentioned the Wifi basically doesn't work so make sure you're on a good roaming plan. We had an issue with the water system at the cottage - no pressure and no hot water. We tried the local gent to come over to fix it but didn't get ahold of him. We took a couple of REALLY cold showers and as a last ditch I sent an email to the owner. Much to my great relief and surprise, Derek emailed back within a couple of minutes and the system was fixed by the time we returned that evening. Turns out there's a great shower with loads of heat and pressure! This issue was obviously a fluke as none of the reviews either here or in the cottage visitors' book ever alluded to water issues - more important was the excellent response time from the owner. Tip for those going...coming in from the Puna side, the locals have set up mountain bike rentals ($25) that allow you to bike the four miles on the gravel evacuation road, just into the eastern edge of the park where the lava is currently flowing into the ocean. Go just before sunset and bring a headlamp. Highly recommended. If you can afford it and have a strong back/stomach, an even better view is had from Lava Ocean Tours ($250)... Thanks for a great stay Derek - loved your cottage."
