  • Large and unique ocean view property

"We have stayed at many VRBOs over the years and really appreciate it when the owners do the little extras. In this case, they had wine in the fridge as a gift as well as a box of chocolates. They had also set up a Christmas tree. The house itself is very unique. It was originally constructed in Bali and reconstructed here. The front room is ship shaped with the bow and stern being the master bedroom and kitchen and the sunken belly is the living room. The back second bedroom is huge with its own living area. Overall, I would highly recommend this place. I think it is good value for this unique offering and it has lots of nooks and crannies to explore. The only con is that the interior is quite dark... not a sun filled place. Basic supplies (limited spices, oils, etc.) and laundry detergent were available."

  • Nice Quiet Location (except for the frogs!!)

"The house is as described except for one thing. Although it is listed as a 3 BR, 3 Bath property, the third bedroom is accessible by a totally separate entrance that is not contiguous with the main property. You can access the main property by the decking on the back/side of the house or by walking out the front door of the 1 BR "apartment" and walking in the front door of the main property with your key or a knock on the wasn't a big deal for us, but it might be for some with younger kids. The main house has 2 BR and 2 Baths with a pull-out couch in a large living room area. The kitchen is stocked and they have a nice water-filtration system for drinking water. We liked the frogs. The back of the house is a panel of windows that overlook a tropical paradise. Hilo is wet!!! I was told it rains more there than Seattle, Washington. There isn't a whole lot to do on this side of the island. We thought the kids would like the volcanos park more than they did so we found ourselves driving over to the other side of the island a few days. The boat ride to the lava flows was amazing. We took the 4:30am tour which was amazing. If the flow is continuing when you are there, it would be a great experience. Watch out for sea-sickness, though. Cafe Pesto in downtown Hilo was a very nice and reasonably priced restaurant. If you scuba, I would highly, HIGHLY, recommend the Manta night dive. It was an other-worldly experience that marks one of the best dives we ever have done. If you are driving home from that dive, don't go over saddle road because of the 6000 feet altitude: take the long way around which hits a max of 3000feet but only for a few minutes. Also, head up to Mona Kea and see the observatories up there. We had absolutely no problem on the mountain. They post all these signs about 4x4 trucks needed and show pictures of all the wrecks, etc. They even throw in the scare factor of 'invisible cows.' We found it all quite comical. Our RWD sedan had no problem going up or down the mountain on the short dirt-road segment. I think they are trying to discourage people because there really aren't a whole lot of parking spots up there. The tours to the top are like $200 per person. We would have been so pissed-off if we paid $800 for a minivan drive up that dirt road. Take your car! It's not even that cold up there! The tours give you parkas, etc. We are from Pennsylvania and found the mountain top refreshing..."

  • Best Spot in Hilo

"This time was as amazing as the first visit. Waves crashing provided the perfect background for a sound sleep. Spotlessly clean, all the appliances you need. Walking distance to town. Won't stay anywhere else."
