  • Quiet getaway in the country with beautiful onsite waterfall and fruit orchards

"A cute little cottage on the owners' property. A neighboring barn where the family is actively caring for horses. The property is very well taken care of - even the hike through the pasture was recently cut/mowed. A great home base for a couple, or two that want to tour the Big Island and have a cozy place to relax at night either at the kitchen table or on the front lanai (both a swing and a rocking chair, nice!!). Just a fantastic experience - just ten minutes north of downtown Hilo! It's pretty close to Mauna Kea - we went stargazing at night (open til 10pm). Only bad thing was the condition of saddle road. VERY rough where it was under construction - it was gravel, not asphalt. You do not need 4WD, just have to take it slow."

  • Cleanest house on the Big Island

"The Tiki's Hut house is a two bedroom one bath with a nice size living room and a spacious full kitchen placed on about 10 foot stilts that allow for great trade wind flow all through the house. There were several stand out things that come to mind when I think about writing this review but the one thing that stands alone is how clean the house and yard was. That being said the Lanai was huge with plenty of seating at the table for 8 plus room to move about the Lanai while barbecuing, eating or just relaxing. Then there were the two yards that were kept very clean with lots of different fruits to pick and beautiful flowers to enjoy. It really was nice to just stroll about looking at all the obvious and hidden plants, flowers and fresh food items. Also the full size washer and dryer was a plus before moving over to the Kona side of the island. The host made it very easy to access the gate and door codes giving us a very private, comfortable (and again clean) place to relax, sleep and eat while on the Hilo side of the Big Island. This house would be hard to top in this area of Hawaii and in this price range. A+++++++++++ As an avid hiker, diver and Lava enthusiast I really liked the close proximity (about a 20 minute drive) to the end of Hwy 130 on the Kalapana side of the current Lava Flowing into the Pacific Ocean. Also the Ocean and the Kapoho tide pools were just a short drive away."

  • This house was awesome! We loved staying there

"The gardens were amazing and it's sooo beautiful there. We loved picking ripe fruit, swimming in the pool, being close to the volcano, etc... the house is well maintained, super clean and well stocked with everything you would need. It really is the perfect big island vacation spot."

  • Wonderful host

"One of our friends auctioned 3 nights stay at this house at Rotary Fundraising over a year ago. Paula was very accommodating and patient with our request and communicating with her. We truly appreciate that. 1. It is easy to find. 2. Nice secluded house with great lanai to sit and enjoy coffee in the morning. 3. Close enough to town of Pahoa and even Hilo. 4. Wi Fi was great to have since we did not have coverage at that area. Just keep in mind: 1. There are stairs from parking area to house so if you have a lot or heavy luggage or bad knees, it may be an issue. And lights were not working so good idea to have flash light. (Or use phone) 2. Screen does not close tight. 3. Both bathrooms have louver door so not completely private. Main bathroom wall is partial so you can hear pretty much everything if you are in kitchen or living room. 4. No AC. Bedrooms has ceiling fan so it helps but only one floor fan in living room area and it can feel bit stuffy if you are used to AC. We walked to Champagne Pond in the morning but did not use it since we were busy going to lava boat, visiting couple of friends near by, driving to Kona and kept busy whole time. We ate at Black Rock Cafe and Kaleo's Grill in Pahoa and they are both recommended by Paula's housekeeper and pretty good. Coffee at Sirus was very good also. She had granola ball and it was really good. We loved Green Papaya salad sold at truck at Pahoa Sunday Farmer;s market. Highly recommended. During the summer, there is Bon Dance (Japanese Summer Festival) on Sat at Pahoa YBA Kaikan. They had some Japanese snack foods for sale. Some wore traditional Japanese summer kimono. It was fun dancing with kids to senior. Something different to try."
