  • A nice quiet cottage

"We enjoyed meeting Karen and staying at her Hapu'u Fern Cottage. The cottage was neat, clean and well furnished. We did not use the hot tub or the wood stove, but they were there to use. The cottage is located in a rural residential neighborhood and only minutes from Volcano National Park. We enjoyed our stay on the Hilo/Volcano side of the Big Island. We would recommend to friends. • Very warm and welcoming property

"We beyond enjoyed our stay at this house we had 2 separate reservations here during our stay in Hawaii. From the very beginning Marie was very hospitable. Even with the main house right next to us we still felt like we had our own place, it was very relaxing and the amenities provided were more than enough We are looking forward to next year's trip and hope to be able to stay here again Stefanie"

  • We loved it!

"Our small family stayed at the honey house in early June 2016, and we absolutely loved it. The house is very clean, comfortable and peaceful. The garden is out of this world and the frog chorus at night and birds in the morning are very special. Dave is a wonderful host, kind, welcoming and quiet. He made us feel at home and we loved the red papayas for breakfast. The black sand beach and the tide pools are absolutely beautiful and worth visiting. I highly recommend this place to anyone and hope to back one day myself."

  • Lovely cottage near Kalapana

"My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Hale Haumea cottage. Diane, the owner, was very helpful & timely in answering our questions during the booking process & called us the first morning after our arrival at the cottage to make sure all of our needs were met. The cottage was nicely furnished. All floors are tiled, including the bedroom, and I experienced no problems with my allergies or asthma while staying at the cottage. The bed linens and pillows smelled amazingly fresh with no mustiness. The bed was extremely comfortable & mattress in excellent condition. There is an air conditioner for the bedroom, which we used each night as I have a low tolerance for humidity. The A/C worked well and cooled the bedroom down after about 2 hours. The bathroom has a tiled tub/shower surround & linen closet, furnished with an adequate supply of hand, bath, and beach towels. There were only 4 small wash cloths, however, so I might suggest that Diane purchase a few more of these (or if you have a longer stay at the cottage to pack your own). The kitchen is nicely furnished with all appliances (refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, dishwasher) and has a beautiful set of stoneware dishes (tropical design). The only items missing were a pizza pan and dish cloths. (We popped a frozen pizza in the oven one night and had to use a round iron griddle to pull it out of the oven.) There is a sponge for washing dishes and wiping counters, but Diane might consider adding a couple of dish cloths. We had no problem with ants during our stay and kept all of our food in the refrigerator, including any open cereal or snacks. We did have visits from several friendly lizards (geckos), but they were very timid & kept there distance from us. On our last night of our visit, we did have about 20 small flying beetles congregate on the ceiling near the lights. Not sure how they found their way into the cottage as we did not have them the five previous nights. We found the vacuum in the closet in the kitchen & the beetles were quickly sucked up with no additional ones found the next morning. We ate at Kaleo's Bar and Grill in Pahoa and had an excellent meal with excellent service. Huge pancakes at the Hawaiian Style Cafe in Hilo (two 10" pancakes - ask for a 1/2 order). Enjoyed Volcanoes Nat. Park, Waipio Valley Lookout, Lava Tree State Park, Mauna Kea Summit, Rainbow Falls, Coconut Island, and the Liliokalani Gardens in Hilo. 45 min. drive from Hilo to cottage."
