Beautiful semi-private cottage close to Volcanoes National Park

4 of 5
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here, and we would totally stay again! The bed was extremely comfortable, and the plentiful windows allowed a refreshing breeze into the cottage. The owner has definitely put in a lot of time in the garden here. It was like a small botanical garden! At night, the local frogs sang us to sleep (warning: they're pretty loud in the summer, but we still enjoyed them quite a bit!). The hot tub felt like heaven after a few days adventuring through Volcanoes National Park. The cottage is located 7-8 minutes from Volcano Village (we highly recommend eating at Ohelo and Kilauea Lodge) and about 12 minutes from the National Park. You really can't beat the location. If you want to see active lava flow, you'll want to go to Kalapana, which is about 50 minutes away, and absolutely worth the drive!! There were a couple of surprises on our trip. First off, you can't drink the water because they use a rainwater collection system. The water is usable for showering, washing, cleaning, etc., it's just not safe to drink. The owner graciously leaves 2 bottles of water per guest per day, but you'll need more if you're running through the park. Thankfully, the owner gave us a heads up, so we were able to stop in Hilo to grab a few gallons of water along the way. There's also a small general/convenience store in Volcano Village (next to Ohelo) where you can get a few gallons of water if you don't get a chance to grab some in one of the more populated areas. Secondly, the cottage isn't exactly private. No one can really see you up there, and the owner has done a great job blocking any line of sight visibility, but we could hear people talking and working below our room during the day, and we could hear the tv and the people inside the other house through the night. To be clear, three sides of the house are mostly private, but the fourth (back wall) faces the main property. The driveway, entrance, and hot tub are on the private side of the house. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay, and we would probably stay here again!

The BEST Lodging When Visiting Kilauea and Volcano

5 of 5
My husband and petite twenty-something year-old daughter and I absolutely loved the Fern Cottage. The hosts are very friendly, kind and most helpful. The large room is very well-appointed, comfortable and immaculately clean. The full kitchen was delightful for us to cook together. The table comfortably seats four people. And, the Fern Cottage is a terrific basecamp for cyclists to explore Volcano and surrounding areas. After cycling beginning near 3,000feet altitude at the Cottage, the extra large shower was luxurious. We thoroughly enjoyed the comfort and ease of the thoughtfully designed Fern Cottage. Our next trip to the Island of Hawai'i will no doubt include another stay at the Fern Cottage. Also, although there is easy parking, a ramp to the front door, and single-floor set-up, the bathroom door might be a little narrow for a wheelchair accessibility. This detail should be further discussed, if needed.
