  • A great home base for exploring all of Kauai in a setting that is elegant yet comfortable.

"Two couples, ages 63ish, stayed for 10 days on the beautiful Garden Island. There's abundant room in this nicely-decorated home to gather together or slip away by yourself and read a good book. The large lanai was truly the perfect setting, at any time of day. The morning sun casts great shadows on the mountains; the evening sunsets are grand. We experienced the "super moon" at it's best. Our "birder" in the group added 16 life birds on this trip, several spotted just from the lanai. It took a day or so to adjust to the crowing roosters, but we came to enjoy them. A nicely-furnished kitchen and lots of little extras, such as CDs, DVD movies, and beach chairs, were appreciated. We picked up breakfast/lunch/necessities at Foodland, but chose to dine out most evenings. Best times: helicopter tour; zip-lining; hiking with a picnic; Waimea Canyon; Kilauea Light; Hanalei for the farmer's market, the Dolphin Restaurant, and the pier to watch surfers; challenging and scenic golf. (When not golfing, the practice range was still available and affordable for the avid golfer in our foursome.) Rough surf unfortunately limited our beach/snorkeling adventures. Those same big waves, though, made Queen's Bath quite a sight to see. Glad to have done the Smith Garden/Boat Trip/ Luau, but happy to remove this dining and theater "togetherness with 450 other tourists" experience from my to-do list. Unusuals: Tasty "take-out" choices and cute earrings/sunglasses from the Princeville gas station. Hideaways Pizza is a nice walk away. Bakery and Bistro at Kilauea proved to be a good option for us. Left undone: kayaking and paddle boarding on the Hanalei River. We didn't try out the outdoor shower. Bottom line: Hale Bali Hai was a terrific "home away from home" for us located in a great spot on the more rural, laid-back North Shore of Kauai. It worked well for just the four of us, but it would be a nice space for a larger gathering of family or friends. The owners were responsive, and seemed quite happy to share the energy of this home with others. Even though it takes a day of travel to and a day of travel from, this "east coast mainland group" would be happy to repeat our 10 days at Hale Bali Hai."

  • Amazing Memories!

"The Ocean Pool House was everything we expected and more! The experience was perfect. We fell asleep to the sound of the waves and woke up to an ocean view and spectacular sunrises. The pictures do not do it justice. The backyard/pool area was like a postcard! We loved how the house was nestled back in the neighborhood and was so peaceful. We were told by friends that chickens were a problem in Kauai, but we never heard or saw one while at the house. It was relaxing to be able to hang out at the house if we wanted some down time, but it was close enough to local attractions, beaches and activities."

  • Fantastic setting, adequate accommodations.

"The view from this studio style condo is unbeatable! The pool area and the beach are just lovely. The adjoining bar/restaurant was fun and tasty. The live music was an added bonus. The condo itself??? We were there for 2 nights and it was adequate for that. The bathtub was gross looking...peeling, grubby finish. There was nowhere to hang or store clothing as in we had to live out of our suitcases. The bed was a very comfortable queen sized Murphy bed. The was enough kitchen equipment to make simple breakfasts and lunches. There were plenty of towels for us to use, but we couldn't find any beach towels. The sunsets were beyond belief!!!! I would give the location and resort amenities 5 stars and the unit itself 3.5."

  • Good enough for the price

"We visit Hawaii 3 times a year and always stay in a private home or condo. In Princeville we have always done condos with views of the ocean. This time we decided to try a house with a pool. This house is bargain priced compared to some others with a pool. The house is in decent shape except for the normal rental 'wear and tear'. To us it didn't feel like a home that someone would live in but more of a 'rental house'. The location is great. Nice, quiet neighborhood (except for the occasional yapping dog across the street!). We loved the layout of the house with the pool in the front courtyard and the house wrapped around it. This house is the perfect layout for 2 couples traveling together because the bedrooms are at far corners of the house giving you lots of privacy. The house was very clean inside and the normal Hawaii bugs and ants were very very minimal. There is definitely some items that make the house seem 'bargain'. A couple upgrades would give it a whole different feel. First off the couches in the living room are horrible. So worn and dirty. The arms are completely broken down from being so used that it is uncomfortable to even rest your arm there. They are definitely past their prime and probably should have been replaced a couple years back. The second issue we had were the nasty bed pillows. Every pillow in the house was dirty, stained and just gross. I did complain to the owner who had the housekeeper call me the next day. By that time I had already purchased 2 new pillows myself and found extra pillow cases to double up on the other pillows we ended up using in the house. I told the housekeeper (who was very nice and very concerned) that all those pillows needed to be replaced. Who wants to sleep on something stained and yellow and dirty. Maybe invest in some pillow covers to keep them cleaner. The pool was nice to cool off in at the end of the day. There is lots of outside furniture for relaxing and dining. The garage has plenty of beach chairs, pool floats, beach umbrella, etc. We had a great time on our vacation and it was nice to stay in a private, quiet home."
