  • Wonderful Get Away !

"We ended our stay on Maui with three nights here and loved it! Listening to the ocean shore and breeze at nite! We have been to Wailea, Maui many times and only did day trips to Hana. It was so nice to take a few days and be in "old world Hawaii" for a while. The cottage is absolutely beautiful in a beautiful location! Being a carpenters/cabinet makers daughter I could not help but appreciate this Victorian era beauty and how beautifully it has been restored. This place has such a special feel about it and the owners are great! They checked in with a couple of times just to make sure all was well and see if we needed anything that was not provided. When we arrived there was fresh fruit from the surrounding trees and music playing. Thursday nite one of the owners sings at the local hotel while local Auntie's perform the Hula. Again puts you in an old Hawaiian feel while they sing. This was fantastic and great cocktails! Don't pass up this place!"

  • Wonderfully peaceful!

"It was my first trip to Hawai'i, and I wanted a nice, quiet place at which to recharge, and from which to explore other parts of Maui. I found this location through the VRBO website and was very pleased with my selection. It was an easy 25 minutes drive from Kahalui, and only 15 minutes from the small town of Paia and nice north-side beaches. The owner was very helpful on my first day in orienting me by phone, letting me know of a local grocery store in Paia and some surrounding attractions. The beaches were not busy, the water clear, with big waves (but not too big for swimming!), and some beaches are dedicated to surfing only. This location was close to the famous Mama's Fish House (I recommend booking restaurants via the Open Table app, or calling ahead, as there is always a waitlist otherwise), and an easy drive to other areas of the island. Kaanapali is only about 1 to 1.5 hours' drive from here. Very do-able on any day where it's raining in Haiku but not on the other side of the island. The property was well-kept, everything worked (plumbing, hair dryer, fridge, lights, etc), and it had the beginnings of a self-sustaining vegetable garden, and eco-friendly atmosphere. Each unit here (I think there were three guest suites, and one unit for the property manager) had its own parking space. The one-bedroom I rented was pleasantly decorated with colorful waves and fish. It fit nicely with the feel and energy of the island. And the little yurt was a good space in which to do yoga when I sorely needed some quiet, stretching time, surrounded by lots of light and a pleasant breeze. I didn't use the pool since I went to the beach each day, but it was nice to have nearby. I'd consider staying here again."

  • Absolute Perfection! Stayed 8 Days...Did Not Want To Leave!

"There are so many special things to say about The Star Lookout Cottage. Walking passed it for the past 5 years on visits to Upcountry, we ogled it and could finally get a reservation this year! It is even better than my wildest dreams and I know it will be always in my heart. Already have our reservations for next March! Otherwise...not sure I could leave! Okay...the features! The cottage sits at around 3000' on the slopes of Haleakala. Expect weather! Beautiful breezes...sun...mist..clouds...down poring rain. That can all be in one day...or over several. The main room is very comfortable for looking out, reading, the large screen tv is here, fast wifi, the fully equipped kitchen, a full bath and the best raised sleeping nook enclosed by light curtains to use or not. The large decks are filled with chairs, the best 2 person hammock, a table. Incredible sunsets from here as well as delightful bird watching! We never used the inside wood stove, the outside fire pit or the outside hot tub! Amazed by the super cleanliness of everything! Silverware, best knives ever, luxurious linens! There is also a separate bedroom and incredible full bath that you access from the front porch. It has a full closet, plenty of unpacking space, a very comfy queen bed, night tables, and a most fabulous bathroom! Sandstone counter top...incredible shower, over counter sink! Tasteful and perfectly remodeled! We switched back and forth for sleeping! The stars from the 'star bed' in the living area are simply breathtaking...as was the light of the full moon, eventually. Planets! The Milky Way! It was great for us to have the option of the other room which was darker! I seriously had to force myself to sleep from the excitement of the night sky! Located on incredible Thompson Road, where very, very people have homes...Oprah's ranch estate is one of your nearest neighbors and it's .8 of a mile away. Great areas of Maui are easy to get to. We spend a few days in Wailea, here and then time in Hana. Clearly, we love peace and quiet. No bar scene, no crowds, no pools with slides here! Just the awesomeness of hiking trails, biking, birds, flowers, Mana Market, Yee's marvelous mangoes(okay, the stand is 50 minutes away in Kihei and worth the drive) and we love The General Store in Halimaile for lunch. We walk to very popular Grandma's Cafe for breakfasts from here. Longest review I have ever written! My only regret is having not stayed here before!"

  • Comfortable guest house

"We enjoyed our stay at Hale Manu for 2 nights in mid October. The guest house is comfortable and spacious. The kitchen is well maintained. We loved the outdoor grill. We bought steaks, lamb chops and chicken drumsticks at Mana Foods at Paia before heading out to Hana and BBQ for 2 dinners. Thai Food Truck is nearby (10 min. drive). Their curry fish over rice is delicious. Order one to eat there for lunch and another one to go, otherwise you will regret later. We were pretty lucky with the weather. It rained at night and early morning and was dry at day time. We had a good time at Haleakala National Park (about 25 min. drive), Pipiwai Trail and Bamboo Forest. It was fun to watch some daring people jumping off the cliff at Ohe’o Gulch. Hamoa Beach is small. Waioka Pond is such a beauty. After driving on Road to Hana with all the stressful curves the first day and a whole day of adventuring next day, Hale Manu was definitely a place that we wanted to come home to. The property manager is very nice. He put some fresh sweet star fruits in the fridge before our arrival and brought us some more the next day. Thank you, Hale Manu, for making our experience in Hana so delightful and memorable."
