  • Oceanside Retreat / Ewa Beach

"Walk out the door, cross the lanai, and you are on the beach and in the water! House has full kitchen & lounging areas up and down, plenty of water eqpt, coolers, gas grill, roomy parking, outdoor (exposed) shower and washer/dryer, and several deck/patio areas up and down. The 5 BRs/3 baths are comfortable and clean. From the beach is a distant view of Honolulu and Waikiki. Each morning we watched the sunrise over the city and Friday night watched the Waikiki fireworks, although we couldn't see much detail. It is about an hour's drive to the North Shore or Windward coast. Shopping (grocery/other) and restaurants are located nearby, even a malasadas truck. Being near Pearl Harbor, military & commercial planes and ships steadily arrive/depart, but the noise is not a factor since the waves pound the beach. (Loved sleeping to that sound!) While an older home, it is clean and updated. The décor is, as expected, beachy. I would recommend the house, but be aware there are some drawbacks. 1. This is a residential section and some of the area is rundown. We didn’t have any serious problems, but some concerns. 2. Morning and evening traffic is heavy. Get caught in the traffic and easily spend 1-2 hours getting to/from sites. 3. The only a/c is in 3 bedrooms. Open the windows and trade winds blow through. But temps in the low 90s made cooking uncomfortable. (After turning off the a/c when away, it was warm when we returned. But, there was always the windy lanai to sit on or the water to jump into!) 4. There is a public beach access alongside the deck/lanai area. That affected privacy somewhat, but wasn’t a real problem. Even with others using “our” beach, it wasn’t crowded until the weekend. 5. The sand is partially covered by vines. The vine produced pretty little flowers, but I didn’t care for it. Also, a large tree in the center of the lanai, while offering great shade, blocked the view and littered the deck. There is nice patio furniture, but we didn’t feel comfortable eating out there because of all the droppings from the tree and the birds! 6. From upstairs, to the beach required going through a downstairs bedroom or out the front door and around the side of the house. Overall, it was nice. If not expecting luxury and frills and getting out later in the day (or not at all), this is a good place. Laurie and Danielle were great and checked on us throughout our stay, even brought us a scrumptious Chocolate Haupia Cream Pie. We enjoyed our stay."

  • Great Time in a Great House!

"We stayed here with friends before, during and after our wedding on Oahu. The house was very nice, homey, roomy, well equipped with everything you need for the beach including towels, and a well stocked kitchen with everything to make whatever meal you'd like (minus the food of course, which was easily purchased at local grocery stores, or Costco nearby). Since it was Mid-June, it was very hot in the house except for the 2 bedrooms which have a/c, however even with the trade winds, the rest of the house was very very hot especially during mid day to evenings. There are ceiling fans in main room, kitchen and bedrooms, but there really needs to be another a/c in the living area since the other 2 are upstairs in bedrooms and cannot cool the entire house even with the portable fans. Overall, we had a fantastic time here, and I would recommend new curtains for the sliding back door, and rent during other times of the year that aren't quite so hot. As other reviews said, the neighborhood does look sketchy, however, it is just local working class people, and older retired locals. We were never worried about things being stolen or taken from the house while we were away. We were away a good majority of each day, and the location is great if you want some place quiet, easy shopping and parking for free! We hung out a lot in the backyard, had a cookout using the grill for hamburgers and hot dogs, it was perfect! I would give this house 5 stars, but with the massive heat inside the house, I just couldn't. However, everything else was perfect, great WiFi, DVD player, TV's were large and worked great, and the roomy kitchen was awesome! Beds were extremely comfortable which is a huge plus! (Safe in master bedroom closet isn't usable, however we felt very safe here without using it.) You should probably get beach shoes for walking on the beach as the sand is very course and does wear your soles of your feet down quickly. We gathered Sea Glass and some tiny shells on the beach each day to make some crafty items to remember our wonderful stay here! The lady who manages the house for Rick is amazing, she would come over and help with anything immediately and always very friendly. Neighbors to the right were very friendly as well! I have a friend who I recommended the house to and she's bringing her family in December! I hope she has half of the fun we had at this very special house! It truly was a wonderful experience! Thank you Rick for such a wonderful property! Mahalo!"

  • Hawaii family vacation

"The house was the size we needed and great location. Could have used AC in more areas of house as it was warm, but provided fans definitely helped. The property manager Nesi was good and helped with all questions. House was very well stocked with common items needed for the stay."

  • Wonderful base to explore the Island

"We spent a lovely two weeks here and we did not want to leave! The home is in a great location, steps to the beach. and great for taking day trips around the Island. Honolulu is only 20 mins, the north shore 45 min and KoOlina (where the lagoons are) only 20 min. The house is great for families, we were travelling with our three kids (8, 5 and 11 months), we needed comfort and we got it. Upon arrival we were met with a clean house, highchair and crib (as per request) and a lovely welcome basket of fruit and chocolate (THANK YOU). Brenda, the manager was very attentive when we called about the broken outside shower door and had someone fix it straightway. My only complaint about the house would be no vacuum cleaner, it was hard to keep the sand out and I had to sweep it in the corners so my 11 month would not eat it. Being in a local community, slightly off the main tourist areas, there are less restaurants. If you like fast food then you are in heaven, but if not there are grocery stores nearby or drive to Honolulu or KoOlina. In Ewa we did try Fiesta (mexican grill), Teddy's bigger burger and ninja sushi (which were all very good). There is a shave ice place called Ewa seed co. that makes great shave ice. The kids loved it. The house is in a fairly quiet neighbourhood, they do have a noise bylaw saying residents need to be quiet by 10 pm, although they had an exception on new years eve as it felt like we were in a war zone. Also the clean up after new years was pretty poor, the beach was littered with firework debris which was a shame. We also had a neighbour who lost his dog a few times and always seemed to be when we were putting the kids to bed. But overall it was still a pretty peaceful place to be. We very much enjoyed our time here and would definitely consider returning in the future!"
