  • Winter Wonderland

"We arrived at the Birchwood cabin on a snowy winter evening, what a surprise to be greeted by a shoveled drive and small lighted Christmas tree. Ian, the owner, checked in soon after to make sure we arrived safely and we had everything we needed. He told us wonderful stories of the origins of the cabin and of Michiana Shores. The cabin is perfect place for two people to escape from the rest of the world. We went into New Buffalo and ate at the Bentwood Tavern - a place I had never been to in all my visits to the area. The food and service were great and the sky was full of snowflakes on the drive back. After a wonderful night's sleep, we awoke to 6 deer outside the bedroom window. No visit to southwestern Michigan is complete without a meal at the Stray Dog Bar and Grill. The food was wonderful (the fish taco's are the best!) and the staff was so helpful and friendly. We stopped at Barney's for supplies for our evening meal and headed back to the Birchwood cabin. Bundled up against the cold, we took the short walk to the beach, crossing from Indiana into Michigan on the way. The roar of the waves got louder as we neared the entrance to the beach, the power of Lake Michigan in the winter is truly amazing. We spent the evening sitting in front of the fire. The kitchen is well equipped with anything you might need. We made a huge salad and homemade pizza and wrapped in a cozy throw, I must admit I dozed on the couch in front of the fire. It was a splendid day. The Birchwood cabin is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of your everyday life, especially in winter. I would love to see Michiana Shores alive in the summer. We may just have to plan that trip soon. I would highly recommend that you do the same."

  • Great place

"This is an awesome house. Lots of room, very clean, and nicely decorated with a beautiful view of Lake Tippe! Lots of towels, great kitchen set-up with wet bar. Dock is easily accessible. Fire pit and deck are nice. If you like to cook take a good non stick skillet. No internet so we used a mobile hot spot which was an added expense. Would love to know if the cat hanging out has a home. We fed him cause he wouldn't leave the patio. All in all a good family spot."

  • Get away from hectic schedules at this beautiful place!

"My husband and I stayed at Somerset Cabin for a long weekend in mid-October. We had a wonderful time at this beautiful property. The cabin is cozy with everything you need. Our favorite thing was the huge stone fireplace. We had warm fires each night. The property itself is amazing. I had goosebumps driving up the long driveway for the first time. The ponds are full of life - we saw deer, geese, wood ducks, a pair of sand hill cranes, and a great blue heron. We loved walking around the property each day, enjoying the peacefulness and the lush outdoors. Just a gorgeous setting everywhere you looked. Make sure to sit on the porch swing and take in the view. Deb & Jim were great to work with. We definitely hope to come back next year. The beauty of fall was amazing, but we might need to check out the cabin and property in a spring setting as well. Thank you Deb & Jim for sharing your place with us. We felt blessed during our stay."

  • Believe everything you read, whether in the listing or the reviews!

"Friendly, responsive host. Reasonable rental cost. Nicely appointed cottage. I may have missed it in the write-up, but it's worth pointing out that this place was remodeled fairly recently. Everything was updated, and the back porch was extended and enclosed during the rehab, while still retaining the charm of the original. Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City (10 miles) was a nice find. Also, the Fire and Water restaurant/bar/concession stand was a nice place to hang out while the kids were 150 yards away at the beach. Of course, the Michiana beach that's only a 10-minute walk from the cottage was special."
