  • Incredible family friendly home for our last minute accommodations!

"I don't even know where to begin! We were looking for a place to stay for two nights on our way from NE to NY with our family of 7. It was very last minute (we called from the road and gave only 6 hours advance notice!) Marian was so friendly and wiling to help me in my moment of desperation. Our whole family was amazed when we walked into her lovely home. We have kids ranging in age from 8 months to 11 years and this house was absolutely perfect (and clean!). The moment we walked in the door the kids went straight for the bookshelves where they found the best types of toys, very neat and organized (and easy to put back away when they were done playing). The pictures don't do this home justice. The decor was so much fun and looked like it was done by a professional. It had a fun retro feel. The whole home was so bright and airy, including the basement which was perfect for our kids! It was full of beds on wheels so they had fun pushing them all together for their movie night. We took advantage of the beach chairs and the walk to the beach couldn't have been easier. We had the entire private beach to ourselves and the kids had a blast! I enjoyed lounging in my chair and watching the fun. We enjoyed hotdogs at Depot Hot Dogs (which is surrounded by a lovely park like yard) and my husband and I enjoyed take out from the Miller Bakery Cafe. We look forward to our next stay at the Cool Beach House!"

  • Wonderful Vacation

"We were very pleased with our stay. Our favorite part was the 2nd story 3-season screen porch; excellent for relaxing with a cup of tea and watching the birds. The house is in a slight bowl and surrounded by trees, even during a thunderstorm with the wind directly off the lake, I was able to sit outside comfortably. After I did eventually get chilled sitting outside, I was able to step directly in and enjoy our second favorite part, the fireplace. We spent several relaxing evenings watching the fire and reading. (We did find it necessary to procure our own firewood). It's an easy stroll of less than two blocks down to the beautiful (and miraculously empty) sandy beach, and only a few minutes drive to the Great Sand Dunes national park. We also drove in to Chicago Monday through Thursday, to visit the Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, and the Field Museum. It took us roughly an hour each day, and though driving in Chicago isn't my favorite, it was quite manageable. Everything was clean and all our needs were met. Dishes, silverware, towels, paper products; even extra coolers we could have borrowed, condiments in the fridge, etc. The house has great charm (though be aware it's probably near 100). Visit with rustic charm and practicality in mind. In our 8-night stay, the only things we could find to critique are that it's a bit dark in the shower, and that we had to drive a ways to find gas stations and supermarkets. We recommend Strack & Van Til at 2168 W U.S. 30, Valparaiso, IN 46385"

  • Excellent Location, Views, Value for Mom’s 60th!

"We loved staying in this charming Dream Guesthouse to celebrate my Mom’s 60th birthday and the town of Miller Beach was quaint and fun.  It was the perfect spot for the 7 of us total, 4 adults and 3 kids, from Dayton OH.  We have stayed at several other beach rentals and this one was well worth the price for what you get!  It was very clean and sunny and offered everything we needed.  The kitchen was perfect, and outdoor grill was nice (even in Winter).  We enjoyed the large TVs and watched old movies on Netflix while the kids played Xbox in the other room.  Beds were very comfortable and linens and towels were good quality.  Mom loved the jacuzzi bathtub too.  The views from the deck of the dunes and lake were wonderful and we even saw 2 deer!  We spent several hours hiking through the dunes and on the beautiful beach.  It was truly magical!  Even though it was Winter, the beach was very pretty and the Chicago Skyline was breathtaking!  We especially loved dining at the fancy Miller Bakery Café.  Mom had roasted duck and loved it.  We also had good pizza at Flamingos one afternoon.  The neighborhood was quiet and peaceful with virtually no traffic since it’s a no outlet street, we didn’t have to worry about the kids and traffic.  Everything was set up perfectly for our arrival.  We got a little tour and a binder full of Jim’s family’s favorite trails, places to see, and other info. Thank you very much Jim for making our Mom’s birthday truly memorable!"

  • Peaceful spot for family getaway

"This home was a wonderful spot for a restful getaway for my family. The house was very clean and the owners had thought of every detail. I actually over packed not knowing that so many extras would be there: the were nightlights, portable lanterns (flashlights), some kids' sand toys and the kitchen was well stocked. We wanted to enjoy the outdoors and beach as much as possible so we cooked each day so as not to have to go out and try to find a place to eat and wait etc. and everything we needed was available. The owner was very friendly and met us upon arrival to show us the property and answer any questions. The pictures don't do the house justice -- its a quaint mid-century design with some fun, funky features. Plenty of space. The beds were all comfortable. The location is wonderful: step off the driveway and pass 2 or 3 houses and you're at the path to the beach. With younger kids and stuff to tote, the short walk was ideal. We enjoyed the beach and water every day. We visited both the National Park (West Beach is very close and there are many spots to hike and great dune walks ) and the State Park (the 3 Dune Challenge was definitely challenging but worth it) and spent time on the neighborhood beach each afternoon. The beach was very nice, soft sand and not crowded. We returned to the house to clean up (ground level bathroom/shower was so nice to clean up the kids as soon as we got inside) and have dinner and walked to see the beautiful sunset each evening. The residential neighborhood was very quiet, even on a busy holiday weekend. We would recommend this property and would stay here again. It would be fun to have a longer stay and take the train in to Chicago for a day."
