  • A Great Vacation

"We had a lovely and relaxing stay at this beautiful home. It was the perfect staging point for day trips to Acadia, Deer Island and Schoodic. We enjoyed sightseeing in Castine, particularly the historic landmarks pertaining to the Penobscot Expedition. The Castine Visitor Center was a wealth of information and the person I spoke with was very knowledgeable about the area. The Plein Air Festival was in progress while we were there, an opportunity for invited artists to paint local scenery for 3 days, culminating in a juried art exhibit, A fundraiser for the local arts organization. We also visited and swam Wadsworth Cove , a local swim beach and were delighted to watch someone parasailing. You can walk, bike or kayak to most everything in Castine. There is a Windmill Hill gardens and grocery by the golf course, where you can get tasty ingredients for an impromptu meal or the local market a 2 minute walk from the house. The house is cozy and welcoming, kitchen is well appointed to cook in, a great library of literary fiction, history , classic and contemporary fiction. We had ongoing games of Cribbage and Monopoly. We felt really special and lucky to stay in a beautiful place as Castine in such a cool house."

  • Most beautiful spot on the island!

"This was a fabulous home for our vacation. The location was perfect and the views were unsurpassed. We enjoyed sitting on the master bedroom balcony each morning and each evening, watching the boats. There is outdoor seating all over the house, not just off the master bedroom. There is even a sunroom so you can enjoy the view even if it rains. The house was large enough for our family of 5, including 3 adult children. The additional apartment was cleverly designed so it could either be a completely closed off private apartment, with its own entrance and deck, or it can kept open and act as a bedroom that flows with the rest of the house. We were worried that one of our kids would be isolated, but it worked out well. The house included everything from cooking supplies to towels to games. My husband and I are kayakers, so we were especially excited when the owner let us use her kayaks and canoe. Stonington was a perfect little town. It was peaceful with just enough vacation-y things to do, mostly within walking distance. We walked to the area restaurants (Fisherman's Friend was our favorite) and to the local shops, and made quite a few trips to 44 North coffee shop, which we loved so much, we are now ordering the coffee online. If you have to drive anywhere, it is always scenic and pleasurable. We drove out to Bar Harbor one day, about an hour drive, and not only was it a great day trip, the drive there and back was beautiful. There were just a few cons, and these are pretty minor compared to all the pros: First, the owner lived on the premises, which was kind of awkward. Sallie is super sweet and was always very helpful, but it was hard not to feel self-conscious. Neighbors and guests and their children often roamed around the property. The windows were always open (for air) and the yard is small, so we felt pretty exposed at times. The third con is that all the indoor chairs were uncomfortable and the master bedroom bed had springs poking through. Also, both the owner and the neighbor had dogs that ran through the backyard. And although we do like pets, we signed a "no pets on premises" lease, so I didn't expect to see dogs squatting down in the garden. The last con is that there was no cell service inside the house and wi-fi was very weak. These are all very minor things but I thought they were worth mentioning. I would still strongly recommend the Stronghold for a family vacation. It is the most beautiful house and the most perfect spot on the island."

  • Adorable cottage with beautiful private beach

"I hate to say anything negative about this place, so I will start with all the positives. This absolutely adorable little cottage was the perfect size and location for our family of 5. The three boys, ages 7 and 4, loved the bedroom with bunkbeds and twin bed. They loved the board games, movies, hammock, fire out, kayak and beach toys that were provided. The beach was perfect, a short walk from the cottage and very private. We never saw another person on the beach, except Leah's father who came over to introduce himself and make sure everything was ok. Perfect and beautiful location away from it all but not far from town, Acadia and bar harbor. The kids loved playing on the huge beach at low tide and watching the tide come in. We loved taking them out in the kayak and sitting on the beach watching them play. The path to the beach needs to be better marked as we followed the blue rocks down the gravel road but once we got to the neighbors house we didn't know where to go and ended up walking through thier yard. Everything that we could have needed was provided, which leads into the negatives. There was too much stuff. All of the cabinets and drawers where full of stuff. Some of it was or would have been nice to have if you forgot something, but random things like half full bottles of shampoo or other people's leftover condiments in The fridge or food in The pantry was just gross to me. There was no place to put our clothes and things away, so we had to live out of our suitcases. This did not bother my husband but I like to unpack and make myself at home which I could not do. The necessities could easily be pared down and kept in 1 or 2 cabinets, freeing up space for guests to put thier things. There were also way to many nicknacks and other random things around the house. The place definitely needed a deep cleaning, cobwebs everywhere, bathtub that needed a good scrubbing and some bleach, and a new shower curtain which doesn't come halfway into the bathtub. The water was gross, it smelled like rust which made the bathroom and kitchen always stinky and dishes and showers were not pleasant to do. I understand it is well water and I don't know if that can be fixed but it was not an enjoyable experience. Overall the place was lovely. A great little cottage in a perfect location. If the owner could adress some of the issues that we found I would highly recommend it and we would return if we were ever in Maine again."

  • Great country charm for a stay in Maine

"My wife, her sister and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary there August 18 thru the 25th. Enjoyed the country charm of the home. A really neat deck on the back side of the house is great place to enjoy a glass of wine and taking in the view of the property. Walked .7 mile behind the property to a beautiful bay. Easy drives to Castine, Acadia National park, Bar Harbor and other points of interest. A nice country landscape to enjoy. All the amenities one would need for a weeks stay. I will give this home an A+ for cleanliness, a place to kick back and have fun."
