  • True Taste of Country

"This was our first visit to this part of Maine, and we fell in love with the whole Mount Desert Island area but especially with Acadia. We enjoyed the view from Cadillac Mountain, but especially loved getting up close and personal with the ocean, at Thunder Hole and at the tide pools at Wonderland. We went on an awesome whale-watching tour out of Bar Harbor and enjoyed walking around, soaking up the touristy atmosphere of the town. We also made a trip to Fort Knox and the Penobscot Observatory, both of which were impressive. Since we were only in the area for 3 days, we spent most of our time out and about, but what time we did have at the house was great - it had everything we needed except drinking water, which was easily remedied. The property is beautiful and there isn't a neighbor in sight, which was nice. Unfortunately we didn't get to see any wildlife around the house, just a woodpecker and other birds. There's an extensive collection of books of all sorts in the front hall for your reading pleasure, along with games and a few toys. The house was a comfortable temperature for the most part; the fans came in handy for making the bedrooms comfortable for sleeping. The new refrigerator is freaking awesome, and it was so handy to have a washer and dryer on site. We also really appreciated having a cooler and some already frozen "blue ice" we could borrow. On the downside, the downstairs shower didn't have much water pressure (I didn't try the upstairs one), and the water tends to smell a bit . . . cottage-y . . . but no big deal. It was a bit inconvenient not to have cell phone service, but the homeowners have made sure there is a landline available. Wi-fi wassn't working great for us - sometimes fast, sometimes slow, and sometimes not at all. Same with Netflix. Nothing that was a deal breaker, and we'd come back in a heartbeat to enjoy this taste of Maine country living and to be so conveniently located by Bar Harbor and Acadia."

  • Great Vacation Find

"What a great vacation find! Having been to Maine several times as a family to visit lighthouses (Coast Guard military service background), we were delighted with the location and small village atmosphere at nearby Winter Harbor/Gouldsboro. Being tucked away in such a private setting was great. We felt like we had discovered a hidden lodge with all the amenities you could ever want. We enjoyed cooking together in the well-appointed kitchen, taking walks in the beautifully landscaped surroundings, and generally just kicking back. Of course, enjoying the heart-stopping view was the best thing going. The only negative to our trip was not seeing a real moose!"

  • Immaculate, spacious cottage in quiet, peaceful setting

"This was our first trip to Maine and we loved it! Our family of 5 thoroughly enjoyed staying at Folkestone Cottage. The house was spacious, comfortable, clean, and tidy. My husband and I enjoyed having the master bedroom/bath on the first floor, and the kids were happy to have their own bedrooms and shared bath upstairs. We were very pleased to see that the cottage was well-stocked with everything you could possibly need, especially since we had recently stayed in an Airbnb house that was lacking enough towels, plates, glasses, and utensils. Having a full-size washer/dryer was also very helpful. The cottage living room was cozy and we spent most evenings playing board games that the owners had made available. There were a few hot days during our stay, and while the house does not have AC, there was a large fan in each bedroom and easy-to-open windows throughout the house to keep it comfortable with cross breezes. The property is surrounded by woods and feels secluded even though it's in a neighborhood. We were able to keep the windows open when we were home and enjoyed the fresh air and views of the lush, green yard. The yard is well-kept and has large grassy areas for the kids to run around. There's a small deck off the kitchen with a table and chairs, and we enjoyed some of our meals outside. We drove into Acadia and/or Bar Harbor everyday (about a 10-15 minute drive) and it was nice coming home to peaceful, quiet Folkestone Cottage every night to relax. Jeff and Lynn were friendly and easy to work with and they take excellent care of the cottage. We have rented many vacation homes over the years and Folkestone Cottage stands out as exceptional!"

  • Great for Large Group!

"My brother's family and my family stayed at the Lake House on Long Pond for a week in August. We had 9 people and the house was perfect for us! Beds were very comfortable and the quiet secluded location was great for sleeping with the windows open. Kids LOVED swimming in the lake and using the canoe and kayak - we hadn't planned on swimming as much as we did! We also loved being able to get out of Bar Harbor and the park each day - both are very crowded and it was nice to feel like we left the "mayhem" of the crowds each day to relax back in the house. Privacy and seclusion were awesome! The open floorplan was perfect for evening activities: kids could play games, read books or otherwise hang out each evening, together with the parents(!) and we didn't feel crowded. Mike, the owner, also gave us a bunch of great ideas on things to see/avoid before we came, which really helped us make the most of our time in Acadia. Great place and highly recommended!"
