Recent Southwest Harbor reviews

  • The house is charming spacious and comfortable. Perfect for our group of 6 adults and 4 teens.

"We loved 6 Alder Lane and hope to return. We enjoyed the quiet side of ANP, alternating days between biking carriage roads, and hiking and boating (some in SW harbor some closet to Bar harbor). Having use of the bicycles was wonderfully convenient. We thoroughly enjoyed nightly campfires, starry skies, and charlottes lobster pound among many other delights in town and in the Park. Thank you for a great stay!"

  • Spacious, comfortable home for a family vacation

"Island Watch is a spacious home that is both comfortable and casual -- excellent venue for our family of 8 adults and two small children. There is a great view from the large deck with perimeter benches and a table with 6 chairs. A pretty glassed-in porch connects the deck to the house. The large great room has a dining table and chairs for 10 at one end, seating with a beautiful, word-burning stone fireplace in the middle, and a bar and stools at other end. The lower level has a sitting room and full kitchen; bedroom; laundry and bath. There are 6 bedrooms and 5 baths on main and second floors. The kitchen very well stocked – dishes and tableware for at least 16. There is virtually every utensil and form of cookware including lobster cooker and large propane grill. There is also a large yard and lovely plantings/gardens. Island Watch is a 5-minute drive into center of SW Harbor; or walk down the back path -- though the walk is a bit strenuous with tricky footing in places along the way. It is an easy drive to everything on the island and then nice to be away from the crush of people when you are "at home." The owners were very accommodating throughout the entire process and during our stay and were immediately responsive to emails in advance of the trip. The home belonged to Margery's mother. They stopped by to check in and provide advice about the area all of which was very helpful. They responded quickly to questions and provided child equipment upon request. The property is pet friendly. We would definitely return. We had a 5-star vacation here, and we would have given Island Watch a 5-star review except for three things -- great room furniture is not especially comfortable (this was not an issue for us because the weather was nice so we spent a lot of time on the deck, but during a rainy week, this would have been disappointing), though there are dozens of kitchen utensils and pans, they are not very well organized so it took a bit of effort to appreciate what was there, the lower level is a bit damp (if we had used this space, it would have needed a dehumidifier), and finally, the house could have been cleaner upon arrival. Let me emphasize that none of this would stop us from returning or recommending the property. It was an excellent choice and we enjoyed it fully. We offer thanks to the Bucks for their hospitality."

  • What a find!

"Having family with grandchildren on MDI, it is often a challenge to find a place to stay in the off season. Manset Studio is a wonderful find for our family! Mary's hospitality was evident from the moment of arrival, with a handwritten note, a basket of fresh fruit, homemade jam, and snack bars. The studio is aesthetically pleasing with its light wood floors, walls and ceiling. Comfortable living area with access to small deck with meadow views, great lighting for reading or knitting, TV, games, puzzles, magazines, a comfy futon sofa and armchair share half of the space with a fully-equipped kitchen that reminded me of a sailboat galley, with its efficient use of space. There was even milk and juice in fridge, coffee beans, tea, cocoa and all the fixings for lobster meal or picnic. Beautiful botanical paintings on mugs and plates. The front half of the studio contains the most cozy comfortable bed built into its own nook. Staying in January, the flannel sheets, down comforters, and throws, along with excellent reading lights made me want to burrow in till spring! A wall shelf filled with a variety of books sits waiting, a big window catches the sun, there is a small desk and chair equipped with radio/streaming. Adjacent is the spacious bathroom with great lighting, shower with excellent water pressure. This studio met all of my needs for an extended stay. Excellent heat in winter, ceiling fan for summer months with cross ventilation. Private drive for parking very convenient. Mary's discreet accessibility made me feel welcomed, and I knew I could seek her wisdom for local resources. This hideaway studio is a gem! Thank you for all you did to make my stay so welcoming and comfortable, Mary! Judy Young van Wageningen, NH"

  • Well maintained & located property for a stay on Mt. Desert Island

"The cottage was just as pictured and our family enjoyed our stay, particularly taking advantage of the views, well equipped kitchen, and laundry facilities. The home felt very secluded, but gave quick access to Southwest Harbor and other key points of the island. Kathryn was very responsive throughout the process and left perfectly detailed directions. We'd recommend to families and would enjoy going back some day!"
