"Peg's Pocket on the “quietside” of Mount Desert Island, is a lovely cottage in Bass Harbor. Peg is the perfect host- very responsive, interesting and a joy to chat with. The cottage is lovingly and thoughtfully cared for. It is completely surrounded by Peg's beautiful gardens, and nearby are quiet and helpful neighbors. The setting is perfect- you can see the harbor out of both the living room and bedroom windows. The cottage is right in the middle of a private lane but only a short walk to the harbor and the Seafood Ketch restaurant.
The house itself was perfect, pleasantly decorated and comfortable for all our needs. It is clean and roomy with several cozy spots in which to relax, both inside and out. You can sit on the small front porch with a cup of coffee or glass of wine and admire the harbor. Although it was just 2 of us staying it would also work for a couple with 2 children. The queen-sized bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was adorable with on-demand hot water. The kitchen was well-equipped with everything we needed to cook our meals (including a 4-pound lobster). For the cooler weather, there is a gas fireplace stove that would take the chill off.
We were so glad that we stayed on this side of the island rather than in Bar Harbor. We appreciated the fact that Bass Harbor is a working harbor and not a tourist town. Mt. Desert Island is quite compact, so we could drive to almost any of our activities in less than 30 minutes. The nearby town of Southwest Harbor (10 min drive) had several excellent restaurants and shops. All in all, the location was the best of both worlds, especially for a relaxing vacation.
For restaurants: lobster roll at Beal's and small plates at Coda. Our favorite was Sips, where we had delicious food, cocktails and wine.
Of course, cycling the beautiful carriage roads is a must. Hike Mt. Dorr instead of Cadillac to avoid the crowds. Drive around the coast and watch the surf explode through Thunder Hole. Thuya Gardens are beautiful. We kayaked secluded Seal Cove Pond, and Long Pond and saw loons on both.
There are plenty of trails for both the serious and less adventurous hiker. And, we experienced some the best star-gazing right from the cottage yard.
MDI has a lot to offer- plenty to keep us busy for a week or more. After each day of exploration, it was great to return to Peg's Pocket to prepare a simple dinner and enjoy the sunset. We hope to see Peg and MDI again!"
