  • Nicer than the photos !

"We enjoyed this comfortable, welcoming home very much. It isn't so fancy you feel you have to tiptoe, or worry about scratching somebodies white tiled floor. The outside space is lovely for morning coffee and afternoon cocktails. The house layout is a bit quirky, but does not interfere at all with enjoying it. It has a family feel and an eclectic collection of books and memorabilia. Homey, I guess you'd call it. You can open the windows and enjoy the sea breeze. There are enough kitchen things to make anything you'd like! I took the liberty of moving a small pyramid gong from a hook on the front lawn to the back deck so we could hear its melodious chime when the wind blew. That's classic Maine ! The rocky beach is a short walk up a lane where you can find bearing apple trees from an abandoned overgrown homestead. ( They'd make good jelly.) Along your walk there is a field of delicate Queen Anne's Lace waving the breeze . It's called a weed but makes a beautiful cut flower. Up the lane is a working lobster wharf , where piles of colorful lobster traps are stacked, with beautifully coiled ropes. If you keep walking over the bridge to Patten's Point there is a charming walk to see other Mainers houses. Don't miss the fellow with all the mermaids and the gigantic metal boat keel or the lady with the enormous sloping lawn of flowers and bird houses. One family had Dahlias the size of frisbees and giant snowball hydrangeas. We didn't meet the owner but she was very kind whenever we communicated by email. I do have to echo one other reviewer- its very hard to find at night . I knocked on the door of a lighted porch and two very polite, but very drunk fellows said "We don't know where it is Lady, but you can stay here if you can't find it ! " The key is to go down the hill, right before the barn like structure where the road dead ends."

  • Lovely place to stay, highly recommended

"Jim quickly responded to our initial inquiry and made the entire process easy! He checked in after our arrival to make sure we had what we needed and were comfortable. The cottage has beautiful views, is very comfortable and private. We enjoyed "hanging" out and our dog felt very much at home (sorry for all the dog hair). We followed Jim's advice re: restaurants and enjoyed meals at Watermans (now closed permanently), Millers, Primo, Happy Clam, Home Kitchen, Café Miranda etc. Thoroughly relaxing trip and a great place to stay. Thank you for sharing your cottage with us. It was wonderful!!!"

  • Sweet, peaceful cottage with beautiful view

"We rented this cottage in September and it was lovely! The view of the cove is wonderful - you see the sunrise right from the cottage - and the shore is great for exploring. It's a wonderful place to stay all day and never leave, as well as explore the region. Sprucehead Island is a sweet place. McLoon's Lobster Shack is a gem for lunch or dinner. The little village roads are great for taking walks. It's a great place to base yourself from for exploring the mid-coast region as this property provides a nice, peaceful respite from the business of Camden/Rockland town areas. The property was clean and very comfortable. The propane heater was more than adequate for heating the cottage (we had overnight temps in the 40s). The decks on both the front and shore-side of the cottages are perfect for hanging out outdoors. For those seeking complete privacy or woods, this cottage does have very close neighbors, as the lots on the island seem quite small and quaint. But it wasn't a nuisance as everything is so sweet and cozy seeming! I think this place is perfect for a couple or for a small family (kids upstairs in the loft, parents on the futon downstairs). We had a great time!"

  • Nothing Else Like It

"I take retreat groups to New England every fall, and we just returned from a week at Whitehead. It was amazing! I can't say enough about the beauty of the island. It was perfect for time along walking through the woods or along the shore; the Whistlehouse was made available for when we wanted to gather together at times for discussion. In fact, when the weather didn't allow us to eat our steamed lobster -- done on the rocks out back -- outside, Gigi transformed the Whistlehouse into a perfect picnic setting. Gigi is the manager and cook -- and she is outstanding as both. Her meals were beautiful and delicious -- and Gigi went out of her way to meet the dietary needs of several of my ladies with allergies, etc. She didn't just make sure they had something they could eat; she went out of her way to fix special desserts, entrees, salads -- whatever was needed. We could not have asked for better or more beautiful food -- and plenty of it! Matt was a wonderful captain and guide. We loved his storytelling ability, and his knowledge of the history of the island made it even more special. He took the ladies clam digging, on a sunset cruise, and worked with us to get our two boat loads where they needed to be in a timely way. He was super to accommodate all of our needs -- at the same time making sure we were safe when traveling in the boat. He was great. Gigi and Matt's love for the island comes through. The seven rooms and seven bath rooms was great for our group -- and it was greatly appreciated. The only drawback for a group our size was there wasn't a really good-sized meeting room in the house -- but I appreciated that in the sense that the Lighthouse had been kept like the house would have originally been - with smaller rooms. We made do -- and Gigi was great about letting us move chairs, etc. around to make it all work. I am already trying to think of a class I could bring to the island, for I so want to return. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in the Lighthouse, the facilities, or the caretakers. Top notch in all ways!"
