  • THE Mooring

"We have been renting here for many years. A great house in a great location on the water. We will return this year and we hope many more to come. A wonderful, unique property."

  • Perfect Maine vacation home with the MOST amazing views!!

"We are a family of five from CA who are just now winding up a magical two weeks in the Dan’s “Cottage.” I can’t get over what a charmed vacation we have had! I looked for months to try to find the perfect home on the coast of Maine for a very special time of family celebrations (30th Wedding Anniversary, son’s college graduation, etc.) It had to be right and boy did we find it!! The house is so peaceful and easy to live in, with amazing views not only from the decks and upstairs master bedroom, but from every room in the house with the smaller bedrooms looking out to the trees and garden. The artwork and décor of this home are very tasteful and inviting. We had wonderful fires in the huge stone fireplace almost nightly, enjoyed both mornings and evenings on the deck enjoying the sun and then watching the sailboats, schooners and lobstermen. The beautiful birds, garden and grass areas are just spectacular and well-tended. There is a BBQ area which we never actually used, but it looked like a great idea. The beds in this house are very comfortable. Our young adult sons each enjoyed their own bedrooms (queen beds) upstairs, and our teen daughter was thrilled to have the second master suite (queen bed) all to herself. The second master suite is in a wing of the house that is very private and would be perfect for a second couple or older parents traveling with a family. Both master suites have their own small TV with cable and there is a large TV with a great sound system in the living room which we enjoyed for movies. We couldn’t get over how spectacular it was to wake up to the amazing view of the Penobscot Bay right outside of the expansive windows upstairs in the master suite (king bed). We slept with windows open and ocean sounds each night. We usually got lunches in town but cooked most mornings and evenings in the very well equipped kitchen. It was especially nice to be eating together again so we made great use of the dining table for candle lit dinners, puzzles, and games (there are many in the closet). We wanted for nothing…one could arrive here with nothing but a small bag of clothes and a few bags of groceries and be completely set…there are even every conceivable level of sunscreen available in the closet! Ray and Barbie are the perfect hosts, calling to check in and offering lots of information and help. Thank you to them and best wishes to all who find their way to this wonderful “Cottage.""

  • The eyrie nest

"Update of Thoreau’s Maine Woods: Where would you take your Swiss relatives who had taken you the year before to the site where your father fought in World War? They wanted nature, hiking, birding, reading, music and restfulness. So did we. And so we came to this wonderful cabin near Freedom, Maine. We saw a bald eagle at Sandy Point and heard loons on the first evening. At every meal, chickadees and nut hatches entertained us at the creatively hung bird feeder outside the screened porch; we often heard a woodpecker in the woods. A loon did show itself to our cousin on a solitary walk. Paul’s cabin is much different than E.B. White’s. You will recall that White allowed the raccoons to live in the soffits so that he could watch their life. Paul has a very tight, modern cabin with every convenience you could want. There was enough wood in his shed for many days and instructions for novices on how to build a fire. My favorite items in the main room: the walnut drop-leaf table, reading lights every possible place you might sit, skylights that made the whole place warm and bright, the leather couch, the LL Bean rug with Maine creatures. I like to be surrounded by books and music and they were provided if you had not brought your own. I was deep into Reinhold Niebuhr and Cormac McCarthy, but made time for the cabin’s Andrew Jackson and May Sarton. We had brought CD's and enjoyed the cabin's wide selection, too. The cousins were upstairs and we were in the master bedroom. To note the level of care, the owner had been told that I was allergic to goose-down pillows, and my pillow had been switched to a non-allergenic one. The bedding was very comfortable. I oared myself in the single kayak around the point in Sandy Pond, the water still and warm in the late summer sun. We felt so at home we rearranged the porch, putting the table perpendicular to the screened wall so that the two couples faced each other. We ate simply but well, partly a result of the well-equipped kitchen. We used the hot tub, particularly delightful at nighttime with a view of the evening sky. We cannot describe the care with which this place has been created and how this care translates into a restfulness that comes over a person who enters with the tensions of the modern world only to find release and peace."

  • Very comfortable house, fine setting

"We've stayed on midcoast Maine and Penobscot Bay many times, and this house is among the most comfortable that we've rented -- spacious and airy, with a fine kitchen, good bedrooms, and deck where we spent much of our time. The area is fun to explore, though on this trip we spent most of our time just hanging out, for which the house served very well. Tim was helpful, answering questions both before and during our stay, and contact with the outside world met our needs with Wi-fi and the house telephone. We'd be very happy to stay again!"
