  • Excellent ten-day stay in coastal Maine

"My wife and I and another couple spent a wonderful week in the Lodge...wife and I had been in the area two years before and served as guides...Lodge is perfect and huge and very clean. Pat, the cleaning lady kindly provided us with a vase of flowers from her garden and a wonderful home-baked blueberry loaf cake...traveled to nearby Maine Prison store, featuring inmate woodwork at very reasonable prices...also, Morse's Sauerkraut retail store for their weekend brunch, featuring one of the best hash we've ever had. Dined in Damarascotta at Crissy's for terrific breakfasts and King Eider for dinner and lunch and always had oysters on half-shell...oysters in this region of the country are the best...clean, tender, opened so that liquor remains in shell and always on ice. Also had our share of lobsters...Chap, the owner was wonderful and agreed that my wife and I could stay an additional three days to avoid crowds during the Papal visit in Philadelphia for an additional fee. All told, it was a great trip to Maine and wife and I are already thinking about returning to the Lodge in two years. As noted in previous review, pictures don't do this property justice. It's terrific!"

  • Another amazing week at "The Laughing Gull"

"This was our third stay at the Gull and each has been fabulous. I almost hesitate to write a review because the secret will be out. Among the many, there are three primary reasons for our return year after year. First, the property is well-maintained. Second, the location and view are what people go to Maine to experience. Third, it is comforting that the owners live directly across the street and are attentive to all needs. Eg. the water heater died Sunday and it was replaced Monday. The road on which the property is located is quiet and the only things that disturb that serenity is the crashing of waves and the gentle hum of the lobster boats casting their traps. There are all kinds of entertainment within a couple of miles: the fort which dates back to the French and Indian War; the archeology of the original Pemaquid settlement (compete with graveyard) which dates back to the 1640's; informal dining at the Contented Sole, Shaws, and the Seagull; fine dining at the Bradley; the incredible breakfasts at Cupboard Cafe; and the convenience of Reilly's grocery store just up the street. There is no need to leave the area, but if you choose to do so, within easy driving distance there are four noteworthy destinations: 1. Boothbay Harbor with its botanical gardens, aquarium, shopping, and tall ship cruises, 2. Rockland with its Farnsworth (Wyeth) Museum and newly opened Museum of Modern Art, 3. Damariscotta with a large grocery store, quaint shops, and movie theatre, and 4. Hardy Boat Cruises which sail to Monhegan Island and take evening cruises up and down the beautiful rocky coast of the peninsula. I cannot overestimate the importance of having the owners nearby. They are genuinely nice people committed to the area."

  • Amazing Stay, Lovely Cottage, Beautiful Location!

"We just returned from a week at this lovely cottage and I can not say enough about how much we enjoyed ourselves. From the moment we turned down the private, tree lined drive, rounded the curve and saw the charming flower boxes on the cottage windows, we knew we were in for a treat. The house had everything we needed for a relaxing stay, and the owners were friendly and responsive throughout the rental process. Here are a few features we particularly appreciated about the cottage: (1) Everything was so CLEAN when we arrived, which made the charming decor all the more welcoming. (2) The kitchen is super well equipped and the sky light really opens up the space. (3) We loved the built in seating around the dining table. It was perfect for meals and games with the family. (4) The wall of windows in the living room made it so easy to enjoy that AMAZING view throughout the day. (5) The bathroom was really roomy and 2 sinks is always a plus. Also loved the outside shower. (6) The extra 1/2 bath was great with 5 people sharing the house. (7) The linens used on the beds were so soft and the king bed my husband and I slept in was the most comfortable bed EVER. So great to get a good night's sleep every night, and then wake up to that view! (8) The hot tub was such a treat. Nothing says relaxation like sitting in a hot tub with a breeze blowing off the water, reading a good book and enjoying that view (did we mention the view!!!). In addition to loving the cottage itself, the location cannot be beat. The view is absolutely breathtaking, with amazing sunsets. The Damariscotta River is full of so many wonderful coves and islands to explore. We rented kayaks from Mid-Coast kayak for the week (super easy - they delivered them and picked them up), and we were on the water every day - always finding a new adventure. We even saw our first bald eagle! We also loved the seal colony that setup up shop on the rocks in front of the cottage each day. Such a unique experience to paddle among them - never knowing where their little heads would pop up next. Swimming off the dock was also fun - chilly, but refreshing in the July heat. This was our first time at this cottage and in this part of Maine and everything exceeded our expectations. We cannot wait to go back next year, maybe even for 2 weeks this time. There is just so much to see and enjoy!"

  • So good I'd almost prefer to keep it my little secret

"Booked this awesome cottage for a solitary writing retreat in a chilly part of the year. You know, you're always a little apprehensive when going to a new spot, but truly, this place was just utterly perfect. Hadn't been there for more than 15 minutes when I began to wonder when I might return. Quiet, comfortable, WARM, and a great location permitting water-gazing, walks around Pemaquid Point, trips into Damariscotta, Rockland, Boothbay for great food and recreational shopping. Everything I needed was there; many small details were taken care of for my complete comfort. Rental logistics were smooth and professionally handled. Easily the nicest vacation spot I have ever booked -- and I've been to some nice places! Imagine it's even better in the summertime. but I bet it would be awesome in snowy weather too!"
