  • Absolutely amazing cabin, location, and hosts!

"I have to thank Jeannine and Bob for the use of their amazing little cabin on the lake. The location of the cabin right on the lake was just breathtaking in the morning during sunrise and in the afternoon during sunset. The cabin was so clean and cared for, I truly felt at home. I even said that, "I want to live in a cabin just like this!". I will definitely be planning a trip back to the Shire and hope to share another Moscow Mule with Jeannine. Their hospitality was so warm and welcoming. I just wish we could have stayed longer than a weekend. This is a beautiful little getaway spot that you almost don't want to tell others about because it's so nice and private and you'll want to make sure you book as soon as possible because it's just that wonderful. Thank you for the amazing stay! We'll definitely be back to the Shire! Shelby & Keith."

  • Clean, rustic home on a sweet little pond

"The Mr and I spent a week at Haley Hideaway with our 4 kids, dog and 4 of our own kayaks this July. HH gets an easy A from us, for a bunch of reasons: 1. Everyone fit in the house, which doesn't always happen with a family our size. 2. It was clean, like really clean; the windowsills didn't have dirt or bugs between the screens and the windows, which a lot of owners overlook, based on my experiences renting lake houses in Maine. 3. It's an exceptionally peaceful, quiet area. Other than some brief noise from nearby ATVing on the first day, we were left to enjoy the silence. The house is in great shape and had everything we needed. The other reviewers didn't lie. I brought things I didn't need, like my Vitamix (they have a decent-looking blender there), my velour bedspread (what, I hate other people's bedding! However, I never used it because the master bedroom has a...wait for it...really nice velour bedspread.) We enjoyed having 2 TV areas, and brought our PS4 (video game thingy), and had an easy hookup since both TVs are from the HDMI 1 and 2 era. I never played air hockey, but I can still hear the echoes of it because the kids ran to it every time we entered the house. You know what's really nice about this house? The mud room. That is just brilliant in a rental cabin. We had everyone leave their shoes there which kept the place pretty tidy. On the last day, I noticed there's a vacuum cleaner in the master closet. Oh well. The pond appears to have been formed by a dam, which makes for some interesting kayaking scenery. Submerged trees twist and protrude from the clear water around the edges. On some of the banks, there are fields of rocks and boulders presumably left over from glacial activity. We spotted several baitfish traps and spoke with the fisherman tending to them. I think he was the only other person any of us encountered on the pond itself! The kids liked being able to paddle from HH directly to Pine Tree Frosty for lunch and ice cream. There is an easy place to pull in the boats next to the picnic table area. We also tried the "Thai" place next door, which turned out to be more of an Asian cuisine place, but the food was ok. The kids enjoyed Rangeley Lake State Park & Smalls Falls. I enjoyed the reliable wireless signal. Our only dislike was the grill, which didn't get hot enough. To be fair: my husband is uniquely bad at grilling & I didn't bother to help. He said the grill is dumb. Do with that what you will. A+ Haley Hideaway!!!"

  • Solidly functional, well-cared for and beautifully situated

"Andersen Camp ("Camp" is a Mainer word for “vacation cottage”) is more than a few cuts above par. I believe the owner Dan, or one of his relatives built it by hand, and the caring shows. It’s quite new and well-constructed with nice warm maple-ish wood hewn paneling throughout and wide board, lovely hardwood floors. There are plenty of double-paned windows and two skylights in the main room. You’ll be really happy about those skylights if you visit during wintertime. The kitchen and bathroom accoutrements are simple, but plentiful and functional. Absolutely nothing in the camp is moldy, rusted, smelly, peeling, falling off, or ewey in any way. Bravo! The stuff in the cabinets and drawers is all stuff that you actually might need. There’s an extensive, well-organized binder detailing all of the activities and eating opps in the area. Eating opps are scattered a bit far and wide, but for water, hiking and skiing activities, you got it made. And as a bonus in case you get stuck indoors, there is a DVD player and a small stack of movies that don’t suck. The grounds are very well-tended. There’s a deck, a large yard, a gas grill, and down a little trail is a sweet creek-side spot replete with a fire pit, wood pile and hammock. Also, the house is well set back from the road, so you won’t be disturbed by anything except birds. Dan is super fair about pricing and deposits. I found him a pleasure to deal with in all of our interactions. When I first arrived, there was a smell of propane in the cottage. I called Dan. He responded in a respectful way to my concerns and got the small leak taken care of within the hour. Finally, there is no wi-fi or cable TV here. I got a Verizon jetpack and had fast, 4GLTE MIFI service no problem. If you’re looking for something super fancy, you may want to go elsewhere, but if solidly functional and evidently cared for (with a touch of style) is good enough for you, this is your place."
