  • Perfect way to enjoy Skaneateles Lake!

"Our family of seven stayed for a week and had a fabulous time! I grew up on the lake (west side) so I know how great it can be. Jan and John were gracious, friendly hosts who anticipated our every need and . The cabin is cozy and updated, making for a very comfortable stay. Extra seating outside at the picnic tables (wave to the Judge as it goes by every evening!), plus a fire pit which was a huge hit (s'mores!) as well as the hammock. The steps to the water/boats are not bad -our four year old had no trouble. This is no cliff like some other places on the lake!! We enjoyed the kayak, rowboat, canoe, and of course fishing and swimming in the beautiful, clear lake. For a break, check out the village for shopping, restaurants, ice cream, and Friday night band concerts. My husband loves to bring his bike -a great way to explore the whole Finger Lakes area. If you want to rent a boat, check out Skaneateles Marina on West Lake Rd. My favorite part about this cabin is being able to sit in the living room with the windows open and feel the beautiful's good for the soul."

  • The railcar was unique and has great character!

"Ok so overall the Railcar was great. It was easy to access from town and was close enough to town to easily drive in if you needed to run to the store or to get breakfast etc. The railcar is very niceand seems very authentic. It was clean when we arrived and had dishes, towels, bed linens, hand soap and cleaning materials needed for the stay. I would personally recommend the railcar for anyone traveling to the lake and looking for a cozy place to stay. I do have a few observations: 1. The single bed with a pull out bed-The lower, pull out bed only had a box spring on it making it not a viable option to sleep on. We searched everywhere for a mattress without success and one of my friends had to get all of the extra pillows and blankets to make a makeshift mattress. 2. The bunk beds also had very thing mattresses which were fine for sleeping on for a few days but I think the owners should look into a thin memory foam mattress topper for those 2 beds or if you are traveling here and staying more than a few days you should bring your own. 3. The Futons are very comfortable! 4. The bathrooms are very small but practical as described depending on your size but the toilets may need to be replaced or at least the seats may need to be replaced. 5. The Railcar has a nice section of yard to play yard games, relax and enjoy a camp fire. The deck is BEAUTIFUL and very nice to relax on. The grill worked well. Access to the lake is located across a quiet road and down about 50 feet. The stairs are somewhat steep but manageable and the upper section is narrower. The private deck/dock is gorgeous and very relaxing. The gravel entrance to the lake is perfect for launching kayaks or wading in. Leading up to the trip the owners were very quick and kind in responding to my questions."

  • great private spot

"The house worked really well for our group. Our adult son slept in the lowest level - he thought it was cooler and there were two fans. The view of the water is great, and our guests who live in the area thought it was great and really loved the deck. The driveway down is a bit challenging - steep with two hairpin turns, but we are from the mountains of Colorado and could deal with it well. The kayaks, canoe, raft and chairs by the beach were a real plus. The town of Skaneateles is also a great plane to explore. Grandma, aged 79, found it somewhat hard to get down to the beach which is quite a ways down from the house. Having to bring towels was inconvenient for us traveling from Denver, and we did buy more toilet paper and bar soap for the shower. Overall, it was a great place."

  • Perfect location; excellent hosts!

"At the risk of sounding too much like Goldilocks, this property is just right! It's not too rustic and not too modern, offering modern conveniences like a microwave and internet but with an old fashioned feel. It's not too far from town, but it's not too close either. It's nice to be away from hustle and bustle while still having grocery stores and restaurants close by. The hosts are friendly and helpful, but they also let guests enjoy their time without interruptions. Three generations of us stayed at this cottage and all of us enjoyed it! We walked up the lane to enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding area, picked berries, relaxed on the front porch and marveled at the view, greeted the mail boat from the dock, played in the lake, and made fantastic memories. I really cannot say enough about what Pinewood Cottage offers families. Skaneateles Lake is a lovely destination, and there's no place we'd rather stay than Pinewood Cottage."
