  • Secluded, peaceful, exquisite views

"Beautiful place. We have been there twice now and enjoyed both equally as well. Once in the fall and once in the summer. Every detail has been thought out in the layout, design and features. The view is fantastic! I would highly recommend."

  • Wonderful, attractive and cozy!

"We loved our time at Big Bear Pen. Bart was very helpful with questions and recommendations. The mountain house was cozy, well-equipped, clean, and just as described. It was truly a lovely and cozy place to stay. I would definitely consider staying here again and I would recommend it to others. One recommendation...the woodstove in the main room is great, but the usual wood (for fireplaces) doesn't quite fit in there. It would be good to either provide an axe to chop the wood shorter (My husband collected some wood outside, but the firewood one buys at the store is too long and needs to be chopped in half.), or to bring one. Other than this, it was a wonderful place to stay and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!"

  • Dan and Cathy

"The home and trip could not be better. The mountain views from the porch were breath taking! The Loadmans were very thoughtful and the home was very comfortable, clean and inviting. Great folks. Would love to return."

  • Relaxing seclusion

"Being right on the lake, but in an alcove away from the marina/boat ramps, made it a very pleasant location. The house was mostly clean and had sufficient windows to ensure lights were only needed at night, yet had sufficient trees to prevent it from becoming an oven in the warmer part of the day. Planning your food is key, as is communication, as there are no grocers nearby (as stated by the owner...thanks) and the wifi...well, the wifi doesn't really exist. Lakes End Marina Cafe has great wifi, so not sure why the house didn't? The waterfalls nearby on the lake, which directions are left in the notebook by the owner, were a restful and beautiful spot to kayak/boat. Fishing the lake was a learning experience, but no trout/salmon this trip, only small mouth bass, perch, and blue gill...all of them fun to catch. We had no neighbors present until the last night, making it a bit of silence my family welcomed as respite from work/school. Close enough to Cherokee/Bryson City to have some alternate activities, but far enough away that the 'touristy' feel was completely non-existent. The pool/air hockey/ping pong table was a surprise in that usually this combo is a smallish version, but this was full-size ping pong and mid-size pool...very fun. Highly recommend for a peaceful visit with fun water activity (we rented a pontoon/tube and had a riot). Also recommend the owner update the wifi, as most people these days are using it for most of their activity planning and communication. Overall, we would definitely stay again! BTW, instructions say no coffee grinder and I took whole beans...YES, there IS a coffee grinder (we're coffee snobs)! And take your boat if you have one! The kayaks and canoe are nice and being able to tie off the personal boat is a real bonus."
