  • Basic cabin in perfectly beautiful river location

"5+ stars for the outdoor amenities, 3 stars for the cabin itself. The proximity to the water is unparalleled, spitting distance to the most gorgeous water view (the river splits into three parts right in front of the cabin and the islands in between are also available for exploring by bridge). There is a lovely fire pit (bring a lighter and kindling with you or you won't be able to do anything with the amazing pile of firewood next to it). Lovely nearby hike and a huge field next to the house- perfect for playing sports or spreading out to fish in the river. Best part bar none: rafting on unguided duckies and kayaks and making a pit stop for lunch at our own cabin on the way down the river (and ate said lunch / snack on the porch right on the river). We did it twice and it was seriously awesome. I cannot say enough about the location to the river. Ah-mazing. However, the cabin less so. As lovely as it is to hear the rushing water and see the amazing views, the cabin is also very close to the highway. (The highway sits next to the river the whole way so if you have one you have the other). Traffic can be heard at all times in and around the cabin as well as noise from the camping sites across the street. The bedroom faces the street and can be loud at night between the traffic and the window a/c kicking on and off all night (ear plugs and a box fan helped us out here). The cabin is part of a community with very nice homes (not remote as we thought it would be) and the hiking area, meadow, islands are all shared with the neighbors. The cabin needs a lot of love. It is tidy and reasonably clean but aged. The wifi was our main issue. We had a maximum of 1 bar the whole trip and it dropped every 10-15 mins for an hour or so. We have Verizon and 95% of the times we tried, there was no satellite signal for that either. We weren't prepared for this so be sure to reserve rafts, download books, look up restaurants, and tell your kids see ya when we get back before you come since you won't be able to do it at the cabin. The bed was comfortable, shower had great water pressure and hot water, numerical keypad lock was great. In comparison this has the prettiest location, but also the noisiest and least updated. Cabin is very basic, just like it states in the description. You are paying for the river proximity here. However if this cabin were updated, wow it would be a gem. Thanks for the nice stay Renee."

  • Gorgeous lake property

"The Lake James property is a beautiful, well decorated, and well maintained property. The house is extremely well furnished with excellent appliances, dishes, etc. The game room was also well stocked and our children made good use of the ping pong table, pool table, and fussball table. With an in-house theater, there was no need to go anywhere else. Bring your groceries and necessary items, the nearest supermarkets were about 20 min away. We rented the pontoon boat and it is in excellent shape. Lots of fun was had on the water. Lake James is clean and beautiful with only a moderate amount of boat traffic on weekends. The house was immaculately cleaned for our arrival and Andrea and Linda were extremely gracious and do an excellent job keeping the house in good shape. My only negative comments about the property are regarding noise insulation, construction noise, and the septic system. A new house has been built within 100 feet of the rented property and there was active construction going on with a backhoe and power saws running during the day during our stay. The septic system is also an issue. We did not have a problem during our stay but there were warning signs all over the house to limit water use and to be careful of the septic system. The house is beautiful but not well sound insulated. Foot traffic, music, and conversations do transmit in the house and can be a bother for those who are light sleepers. Overall, we had an excellent stay and plan to return at some point in the future. We would definitely recommend the property to friends and family. It is rare to find such a beautiful property for rent. A big Thank You to the owners for being willing to rent such a beautiful property."

  • BEAUTIFUL & AMAZING Mountain House and Getaway!

"My husband and I have rented several mountain homes but this home is by far our favorite and we have already booked a return visit. The house is more beautiful than what you can see in the pictures and it is 3 stories of pure mountain house delight. We loved both fireplaces and especially the Jacuzzi tub on the back deck overlooking the beautiful trees and fall leafs. The owner was very responsive and wonderful and easy to work with. The house is warm, cozy, very clean and beautifully decorated and is located in the best part of blowing rock. We are definitely looking forward to our return visit and bringing the rest of our family. Thank you for a wonderful experience."

  • Peaceful

"The cabin was just as described, clean and cozy. This was our first time using Home away rental and the owners were easy to work with. Our trip was for visiting relatives in Murphy. We got there at 11pm and it was raining when our GPS took us to the wrong street. Mrs.Costello was so nice to guide us to the cabin on the phone. I have to admit that the driveway was little scary trying to navigate it in the rain and at night for the first time. After that we got the hang of it and had no problems. They even left the light on for us which was a big help. We stayed two nights and the cabin was perfect for my husband and I. I would recommend it to anyone."
