  • Making Memories in the Blue Ridge Mountains

"My family and I stayed at Mountain View cabin #2 in early June 2016, and it was a fantastic experience for us. The MV cabins are midway between Asheville and Boone, North Carolina, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of the most scenic drives in North America. Traveling on the parkway is an awesome experience, not simply going from point A to B. We enjoyed all of the area scenic overlooks. Staying at the cabin was really fun too, and such a pleasant change from living out of hotels. It was like owning our own cabin for the four days we were there. Our cabin was roomy, with a high ceiling, two bedrooms, an efficient kitchen, and pine throughout. It has a nice balcony and hot tub. Hotels are convenient, but staying at the cabin was memorable. Jill Cash, the owner, made things easy for us, and was always responsive to our needs. Whenever we called her, or sent emails, she responded within minutes. When Microsoft locked me out of OneDrive, where I had filed my cabin information, Jill quickly and cheerfully sent new information. She was great: very accommodating and nice. Nearby attractions include Asheville, the Biltmore Estate, wineries, and lovely small towns, like Spruce Pine. Most importantly, they are in the Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Mountains, peaceful nature at its best. There are too many “must-see” places to mention, but Linville Falls was my favorite, along with the forest, and the parkway itself. We saw the elk at Cataloochee in the Great Smoky Mountains. The area has many surprises. Knife and Fork, a restaurant in Spruce Pine, serves meals as elegant and good as what we have had in fine restaurants anywhere. At The Italian Restaurant in Pineola, three of us ate a mountain of food for less than $40. It was just what we needed after an afternoon of hiking at Linville Falls. Were there any negatives? I was apprehensive about finding the cabin along the twisting roads, once I left the parkway, but Jill provided a colorful map, so it wasn’t a big deal. Staying at the cabin was memorable. We’d like to spend a week some coming autumn, to enjoy the fall colors."

  • Comfortable and clean

"The house is nice, lots of seating, speedy internet. We met the owner and his wife, who were very accommodating. We fit two families, mine and my brother-in-law's, into the home for our stay (one upstairs, one down). Kitchen had pretty much anything you'd need for cooking. Washer and dryer downstairs. Expect to have to drive pretty much anywhere you want to go, but the house is a good central starting point to a number of different areas. We took little driving excursions to Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain (where the line was so long to get in that we left), which were both quite close, and Blowing Rock, Mount Mitchell, and Watauga Lake (which were quite a bit farther). The "Linville Land Harbor" is a nice development with a golf course there. It's a pretty area to walk around, but not much to see. There was a grill that we used; it worked well."

  • Amazing house, Secluded yet Close, Great Views, Best Amenities Ever

"Must echo other reviewers in agreeing you just can't go wrong staying at Coal Train House! Immaculately clean; beautiful, unique furnishings and art; best equipped house we've ever rented (and we've rented a lot). Add the gorgeous view, pond, excitement of the daily train, beautiful (cool and clean) river and proximity to town, Penland School and other activities--the perfect vacation spot. Having a host actually meet you, and also the fact they live fairly close--huge plus. No one wants to show up at a rental, ready to relax, and not be able to get in, find the key, punch in a non-working code, or find essential equipment not working. K met us, explained the A/C thermostat, pointed out essential features, and answered our questions. Another plus is the fact that every need or want has been considered in this house--from the grill on the porch, to the very well-equipped kitchen (all basics, including oil, spices, mayo, tea, coffee, syrup, tons of plates, glasses, utensils, napkins, cutting board, toaster, blender--and much, much more that I can't recall). Linens and bedding are comfy and attractive, mattresses great, towels plush. No second hand "vacation home" items here, at all!!! Even the cookware is high end, as is everything else in this home. Thoughtful touches abound, including games, books, music, binoculars, cooler--even breakfast basics upon arrival (pastries, orange juice, coffee, creamer, fridge full of drinks). I can't think of a single thing that we could have possibly needed or wanted. So many extras...As for the home itself--perfect place for two small families or one extended, with multiple porches/balconies and lots of outdoor space to "get away," plus bedrooms on two floors and plenty of bathrooms. Outdoors you can bird watch, gaze at the view of the river and hills, hang out at the pond (hammock and pier down there--feed the fish, read, nap), or walk the railroad tracks about a 1/8 mile upriver to access a small sandy area for river play. Road into property is a smidge steep in places, but excellent condition on our visit, with lots of gravel, no "washboard" areas. As others mentioned, there is one small house on the same property, but it is not close and plenty of vegetation between the two homes (and apparently the home is rarely occupied). You would never know it is there, and you feel quite secluded, especially as the sound of the river is constantly in the background. No mosquitoes at all, despite the pond. Dog paradise, too!"

  • Perfect, comfy, home away from home with a gorgeous view

"This place was simply perfect. It was conveniently located to Banner Elk, Boone, Blowing Rock, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and lots of other wonderful things to do in the mountains. Tim and Sandi are so friendly and gracious, and they helped us out with the one small issue we had (user error...nothing at all wrong with this cottage). The view from the back deck is gorgeous and so relaxing. We loved having our coffee there. The cottage is so inviting and charming. The beds are comfortable, it is fully stocked with anything you could need, and it is the picture of comfortable, relaxing mountain bliss. We loved it and cannot wait to come back!"
