  • A week at the China Whaler

"Rating Details: The property manager was more than helpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: My inlaws and myself spent the last week of July at the China Whaler this year. We enjoyed our stay here. This was our forth year in the Whalehead community and this house fits our needs the best. We had enough room for everyone, and enjoyed the amenities this house provided. We were there on an incredibly hot and very humid week, so the pool was the best treat for us all! There is a very good chance that we will plan to stay at this house again in the future."

  • Stay Here!

"Tim and Cindy are fantastic to work with. Their home is unbelievably well kept and stocked with tons of goodies for cooking, fun at the beach and in the pool. The weekly is tremendous compared to that of other comparable homes. The photos are not up to date, with many upgrades having been completed since they were taken. This is a quiet, shaded lot with easy beach access (use the path from the cul de sac!). What a great week in the OBX!"

  • Great Place to Stay and Great Hosts

"This was our first time to OBX, and it will definitely not be our last time. The owner was super nice, and very accommodating. Everything we needed was at the house. It was clean, and smelled nice too. There were two adults and 2 children, and there was plenty of space and rooms for other people if our party would have been larger. The sectional fit our group, but I don't think any more than us to sit on the couch, but with all the TV's in the house, you could watch TV somewhere else (we were too busy enjoying the weather and the short walk to the beach to watch anything). The grocery store and other shopping was really close and convenient. The pool and hot tub were both very clean. Great working washer and dryer, dishwasher, all the kitchen tools you needed including a crockpot, pots and pans, baking utensils, strainers, a blender, and everything you could need. There was great water pressure in the showers, and the water got nice and hot. There was a working computer that was connected to the internet, which would be great for older folks who don't know how to use wifi or if your device is lost/charging. There were quite a bit of steps and the kitchen and dining area are on the third floor, so I would probably discourage anyone with problems going up stairs from renting, only because it would be a lot of work to go all the way up stairs for dinner. However, it really isn't that bad, and there are so many ways to get in and out of the house that it was always easy to yell down to the kids to come up for dinner. The house was also stacked with current DVDs and a great selection of games (we played Apples to Apples). There was also some fun mini golfing, and a small arcade/go-cart track nearby if we wanted to go out at night. We would definitely come back to this house, and it was a really great price too. Thanks for having us!"

  • Hat's off to the owners!

"Thank you for allowing us to rent your home. We also own a vacation property in the Northeast and realize the trust placed in the renters to treat the property as if it were their home. The property is lovely and well furnished. We did not expect the variety of recreational items, i.e. bikes, boogie boards, sand toys and games, that were in the house. The proximity to Buck Island amenities as well as the shopping center (Timbuck II) makes this an ideal location. The layout of the house was well suited for our family ranging in ages from the 70's to 2 years of age providing us all with privacy and comfort. The beach was amazing as we were surprised at the depth of the beach and overall cleanliness. Only downside was the property is listed as being "not" pet friendly but we had to remove dog hair from our clothing and children's blankets after sitting on the main floor couch. Several members of our family have allergy issues and we only rent properties that do not allow pets. Thankfully, no problems arose due to this issue. I would highly recommend Mermaids Retreat."
